Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

On September 17, at the main building of ANAS, kicked off international scientific-practical conference on "Problems of adaptation and natural geo-economic systems to modern global change" dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Institute of Geography of ANAS.

The event was attended by scientists and specialists from Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Iran, Russia, Belarus and other countries, members of the Department of Earth Sciences of ANAS, well-known figures of science, literature and culture, as well as media representatives.

First, event participants got acquainted with the books published by scientists of the Institute of Geography in the foyer of the Academy.

The anniversary event was opened by President of ANAS, Academician Akif Alizadeh, who spoke about the valuable contribution of the Institute of Geography in Azerbaijan science, congratulated the staff of the Institute on the occasion of the anniversary, wished success to the work of conference.

The head of ANAS noted that in the conference, which will last two days, will be listened reports on "Current global change: the scientific and theoretical foundations, research methods," "Global climate change and its impact on the natural and economic system", "The impact of natural hazards and threats to landscape and geomorphological system"," The problems in securing water resources by global changes","Environmental geographic problems of the Caspian Sea are the result of global climate change", "Socio-economic and regional problems created by global changes".

Then the director of the institute, Academician Ramiz Mammadov made a presentation on the topic "Institute of Geography - 70". The report was considered by the historical path traversed by the Institute of Geography, and noted that the institute’s key research fields were constructed on the basis of two important scientific problems. It was noted that the Institute of Geography conducted research on the development and interaction of natural, economic and social processes in the geographical territory of the country, the laws of the location of natural resources, as well as exploring ways of their rational use. A number of scientific problems were elaborated to study the biosphere, atmosphere and marine natural resources and their rational use and protection of the environment. The institute studies have been conducted in the field of landscape, geomorphology, paleogeography, neotectonics, biogeography and Caspian Sea. For 70-year period of this scientific institution have been published more than 300 books, atlases, maps, books, and more than 100 books and about 5,000 articles.

Academician R. Mammadov informed about the release of the book "The Institute of Geography of the 70-year period: achievements, prospects and priorities", that reflects the history of the creation of a scientific institution headed by him, as well as successes. The scientist noted that, new edition embraces not only scientific results but also scientific research to be conducted at the institute, in accordance with the strategic plan of development of the country until 2020, including the problems of natural and economic systems and their impact on the environment, the challenges faced by the geographical science, and other priority areas.

The speaker also talked about the important steps taken in the expansion of international relations of the Institute of Geography.

Addressing the meeting, director of the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SRC) Farhad Mammadov, dean of the Faculty of Geography of Baku State University (BSU), Professor Farda Imanov and others congratulated the staff of the Institute of Geography on the occasion of the remarkable day, wished them new successes.

At the anniversary event were shown slides depicting the historical path of development of the institution.
