Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

The eminent scientist, Nobel Prize laureate, honorary member of ANAS, Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine Aziz Sancar, visited the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies (IMBB) of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The president of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbeyli, director of State Agency for Science and Higher Education at the Ministry of Science and Education Ulker Sattarova, vice-president of ANAS, director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies, academician Irada Huseynova, head of the Department of the international relations and work with the international scientific organizations of the Administration of the Presidium of ANAS, PhD in biology, docent Esmira Alirzayeva, head of public relations, press and information Department of the Presidium Administration of ANAS, PhD in philology, docent Agahuseyn Shukurov as well as the employees of IMBB participated in the meeting.

Nobel Prize laureate Aziz Sancar got acquainted with the scientific research conducted in the laboratories of the Institute with modern equipments. The world-famous scientist also became familiar with the library and study room of the academician Jalal Aliyev.

Academician Irada Huseynova informed the distinguished guest about the history, development, structure, researches, achievements, training of staff capacity, international relations and grant projects of the Institute. She underlined that the formation and development of new areas of biological science in Azerbaijan was associated with the name of academician Jalal Aliyev. The academician added that all conditions had been created in the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies for youths’ scientific activity and integration into world science according to the tradition of Jalal Aliyev.

The director of the Institute highlighted that she was proud to see Aziz Sancar at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies.

Professor Aziz Sancar expressed his satisfaction with his visit to the Institute and highly assessed the staff capacity and scientific research conducted in the laboratories of the Institute and wished the employees of the Institute success in their future activities.

Aziz Sancar also talked about his researches in the sphere of DNA Repair that won him a Nobel Prize and the basis of regulation of the biological clock and shared his experiences with the scientists of IMBB.

In the end, Aziz Sancar wrote his heartfelt words in the Guest Book and expressed his confidence that the researches of the young scientists of IMBB in the sphere of genetics will benefit Azerbaijan, the Turkic World and all mankind.

Nobel Prize laureate Aziz Sancar presented his book “Hayatı və bilimi” (“Life and Science”) to the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies.

It should be mentioned that the Nobel Prize laureate visited Azerbaijan at the invitation of the president of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbeyli. Nobel Prize laureate Aziz Sancar will report on the theme “Turkic world science policy: realities and challenges” at the special meeting of ANAS and held meetings in several institutions during his visit, which is scheduled to last until June 6.
