Today www.science.az, web-site of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, which has a special role in Azerbaijan press, celebrated 20th anniversary. Since the day of establishment, portal served to detailed and comprehensive coverage of the scientific and social life of the country.

Today, Institute of Information Technology hosted the 20th anniversary meeting of www.science.az. Event was attended by governmental officials, notable scientists, Internet-media specialists, and mass media representatives.

President of ANAS Acad. Akif Alizadeh opened the jubilee event and stated that, 2015 has memorized with jubilee dates of various remarkable events. One of these solemn events was 140th anniversary of Azerbaijan Press organized by the Order of Mr. President Ilham Aliyev. Azerbaijan press had emerged with publication of “Ekinchi” newspaper, passed a complex and difficult development way, and later with the launch of a radio and television, media has stepped into a new stage of development, noted A. Alizadeh. 

In 1995, the first web-site of the country – official web-site of ANAS was founded. Firstly, it was functioned under the name of www.ab.az, then by the decree of ANAS Presidium it was renamed to science.az.

Within the 70th anniversary of Academy, new version of the portal was commissioned. In addition, first scientific Internet-TV “ElmTV” web-channel began to broadcast in the portal.

“Today we can proudly say that, www.science.az has laid the foundation of Internet-media and web-journalism. Taking into account innovations brought by www.science.az, we can call it “electron-Ekinchi” of the modern era”, stated A. Alizadeh.

At the end of his speech he congratulated all creative staff of the web-site on the occasion of 20th anniversary and wished successes in activity.

Delivering a lecture on “Emerging, development phases and prospects of www.science.az” Academician-Secretary of ANAS director of the Institute of Information Technologies, Acad. Rasim Alguliyev spoke about 20 years of history of the site, and highlighted its special place in an information space. After national leader Heydar Aliyev’s return to the power for second time, as all spheres ANAS has developed as well. The first examples of online media date back to the end of the XX century, thus, Internet junctions and their internal network infrastructure for the first time were established in ANAS, supported by Bilkent University and "British Petroleum". Internet access for the first time was realized in 1991 at the Institute of Information Technologies of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences by a group of scientists and experts.

“www.science.az - is an Agency of Scientific News”, noted R. Alguliyev and made speech on development phases of the web-site. Three periods of development are characterized – the first period 1995-2003 years, second period 2003-2005, and third period 2015 and after. Web-site is being regularly updated and developed, according to the database scale, content and architectural indexes.

Information resource embraces 25 thousand web pages in the Azerbaijani, Russian and English languages. As for the statistics of visitors every day, nearly 6 thousand of users refer to web-site, a monthly audience of about 180 million people, while 2 million users appeal to a portal per year. "Web site also is an experimental base of scientific data, data inquiry system and a multimedia gallery" – said the speaker and noted that, over 60 thousand photo-audio-video data from various taken measures during the period of 2004-2015, were collected in the portal and these materials were shifted into a historical chronicle.

Academician also touched upon the functioning of Elm TV and stressed out it as the only video resource comprehensively reflecting the activities of the institute and organizations of ANAS. It aims to promote science, and deliver existed problems and scientific achievements to the public. Since the New Year, web-site of Elm TV will be commissioned, he added.

Academician Rasim Alguliyev congratulated the creative team of the web-portal, celebrating 20th anniversary, and wished successes to them in its development.

In the event chairman of Azerbaijan Press Council Aflatun Amashov, President of Azerbaijan Internet Forum Osman Gunduz, chief of Electron-Security Center attached to Ministry of Communication and High Technologies Faig Farmanov, editor-in-chief “New Azerbaijan” newspaper Hikmat Babaoglu reported and highly appraised role of Internet media and its consistent part social media, including place of www.science.az in promotion of Azerbaijan science, and its opportunities of a mega portal as Internet-journalism school of Azerbaijan.

Then, elmtv.az web-site of the “ElmTV” Internet-television was presented. Chief of “ElmTV” Khatira Jabbarzadeh noted that, the web-channel reflecting various sections and rich video gallery will broadcast video materials about life and activity of Azerbaijani scientists who contributed to world science, notable scientists living in abroad, including videos of scientific innovations occurring in whole world.

In closing, employees who distinguished for efficient activity at science.az were awarded the “Honorary Diplomas of ANAS”, and donated memorial gifts.
