Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

An international scientific conference titled “The Contract of the Century - 30” was held at the Institute of History and Ethnology of ANAS named after A.A. Bakikhanov on September 20.

Dear memory of National Leader Heydar Aliyev and the brave sons of Azerbaijan who became martyrs for the independence and territorial integrity of our country was honored at the conference and the National Anthem was played.

The event was opened with a speech of Ilgar Niftaliyev, Doctor of historical sciences and deputy director for scientific affairs of the Institute. He noted that today, the State Sovereignty Day is being celebrated in Azerbaijan for the first time and conveyed his congratulations.

Ilgar Niftaliyev stated that the agreement signed in Baku on September 20, 1994, which encompassed several oil contracts, was called “The Contract of the Century” due to its historical, political and international importance. “The contract which is considered one of the glorious pages of Azerbaijan’s modern history was realized as a result of the will and firm statehood determination of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev, as well as his decisive and consistent policy.”-he said.   

During the event, a video dedicated to “The Contract of the Century” was shown.

Then the international conference continued in scientific sessions, both in person and online.

The scientists delivering their reports highlighted that the contract included 13 leading oil companies from 8 countries of the world, and discussed its significance for Azerbaijan’s socio-economic and political development. They emphasized that with signing of the contract, the successful implementation of the “New Oil Strategy” of Azerbaijan began and cooperation in this sphere reflected the trust of foreign partners in Azerbaijan’s economy.
