A presentation of the textbook titled “A Grammar of Contemporary Azerbaijani” (“Müasir Azərbaycan dilinin qrammatikası”) was held at the Baku Book Center on September 20.
The Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva, the head of Baku Media Center Arzu Aliyeva, as well as prominent figures from Azerbaijan's academic, cultural, and public sectors attended the event.
The authors of the book, published with the support of the State Committee on Work with the Diaspora of the Republic of Azerbaijan are linguist Sabina Aliyeva and the vice-rector for International Relations at Azerbaijan University of Languages, Jala Garibova.
In an interview given before the presentation of the book, linguist Sabina Aliyeva said that the textbook covers all grammatical categories and constructions for English-speaking individuals to learn the Azerbaijani language. “The book is written in English. Examples for each grammatical category and structure are provided in both Azerbaijani and English. There are tables summarizing all the grammatical categories at the end of the book. The textbook was written over a period of about four years. The experience gained from teaching foreigners over nearly 20 years helped in the creation of this book. In response to the documents signed by President Ilham Aliyev aimed at the development and promotion of the Azerbaijani language, we also tried to make a small contribution to this effort,”-she said.
The Chairman of the State Committee on Work with the Diaspora of the Republic of Azerbaijan Fuad Muradov said that the authors began working on this project nearly five years ago. He emphasized that our compatriots living abroad consider the preservation and development of the Azerbaijani language as a top priority and added that, under the instructions of President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva “Azerbaijani Houses” have been established abroad.
“Saturday-Sunday schools have been organized within the “Azerbaijani Houses” so that our children and young people growing up abroad can use these opportunities to learn the Azerbaijani language.”-said Fuad Muradov.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, linguist Sabina Aliyeva stated that every effort made in the sphere of the Azerbaijani language is a service to the homeland for her.
Jala Garibova, the vice-rector for International Relations at Azerbaijan University of Languages stated that there was a great need for such a textbook. “We have been teaching Azerbaijani to foreign students for several years. During this process, we realized that there was a significant need for a textbook on the systematic grammar of the Azerbaijani language, and we started working on this book,"- said Jala Garibova.
The editor of the book and the rector of Azerbaijan University of Languages Kamal Abdulla emphasized the importance of the publication, noting that today, many students from various countries are very eager to learn the Azerbaijani language. “I believe that this book will become a valuable resource for those who wish to learn our language,” -he underlined.
Sevinj Aliyeva, the director of the Monitoring Center under the State Language Commission mentioned that this textbook will become a rich resource for anyone learning the Azerbaijani language in the future.
Academician Rafael Huseynov, the director of the National Museum of Azerbaijani Literature named after Nizami Ganjavi said that every book dedicated to the Azerbaijani language is significant, stating that this work holds great importance.
