Azerbaijani archaeologists have conducted archaeological research in Türkiye

With the official permission of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Türkiye the archaeological exploration was carried out in the territory of Iğdır province of Türkiye, with the participation of scientific team from the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS, headed by PhD in history M. M. Huseynov, and including members S. H. Ashurov and B. M. Jalilov, alongside Turkish specialists.

This is a new direction of joint research between the Republics of Azerbaijan and Türkiye.

The first year of the five-year project consists of exploratory research. The results of the research are crucial for shedding light on the issues of Eastern Anatolia-Azerbaijan archaeology. Within a short period, settlements from the Late Chalcolithic-Early Bronze and Middle Bronze Ages, a city site, a fortress, and numerous kurgans have been recorded. Surface materials were collected, and the most significant ones were handed over to the Iğdır Museum. The newly recorded monuments are closely related to those of Azerbaijan, particularly Nakhchivan. Continuing the research will contribute to our shared history with more interesting discoveries. Extensive archaeological excavations led by Azerbaijani archaeologists are planned at one of the newly discovered sites.
