Report of the scientific and organizational activity of the Department of Agrarian Sciences in 2015

Report of the scientific and organizational activity of the Department of Agrarian Sciences in 2015

On January 29, Presidium of ANAS held regular meeting of the Department of Agrarian Sciences.

Meeting was attended by bureau members, directors of the institutes, deputy directors of science and representatives of the other relevant governmental agencies.

Academician-Secretary of the department, Academician Garib Mammadov spoke about scientific and organizational activity of the Department of Agrarian Sciences in 2015. Studies covering 6 problems in 44 topics have been carried out in the department in a reporting year, he stated.

Academician also informed that the Institutes of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Genetic Resources, Erosion and Irrigation department had conducted serious scientific-theoretical and practical-innovative research, and achieved important results. He stressed that as a result of striving for new methods through the use of modern equipment the institutions managed studies at the level of the world standards, and achieved important successes.

Academician Garib Mammadov said that, taking into account the important role of agriculture in food security and the development of non-oil sector, President Ilham Aliyev declared 2015 - "Year of Agriculture", thus began a new stage in the development of the agricultural sector.

It was pointed out that the charges of the head of state in the 70th anniversary event of ANAS priorities set big challenges for agricultural production and agricultural science. In his speech, the head of the country attached special importance to agricultural research and urged scientists conduct serious research in the field of efficient use of large plots of land, recently included in the seeding turnover, through the use of reservoirs and Shamkirchay and Takhtakorpu.

It was noted that in the reporting year, the Institute of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry has studied the genesis, diagnosis, soil classification, soil inventory issues based on aerospace materials. Soils were also assessed from an environmental point of view. Furthermore, in the institute were established coordinates of lands provided for research. For the first time, taking into account plant-animal needs of the areas of winter pastures and landscapes, was carried out their environmental-power-engineering assessment at the differential level and grounded reasonable way to improve them.

This year, a new organic-mineral fertilizer was obtained in the Institute of Soil Elm and Agro chemistry, have developed effective methods of its rules and extradition on the background of mineral fertilizers in various agrocenoses. In addition, for the first time in Azerbaijan has been prepared biomorphogenetic diagnosis of irrigated land suitable for growing vegetables by the subtropical zone.

Level of erosion, erosion basis were studied and mapped in the Institute of Erosion and Irrigation. The institute also found that in addition to saving irrigation water 4-5 times in Ganja-Gazakh region of Azerbaijan, there is also the possibility of increasing plant productivity by 35-40% with the use of new less intensive advanced irrigation technology created at the institute.

In a reporting year have been labs equipped with the most modern equipment with a strong human potential in the Institute of Genetic Resources. Currently, the national Gene bank, functioning in the Institute, stores more than 11,000 plant specimens. In 2015, the Institute has continued to collect main crops and their wild ancestors. The gene bank was included 409 new samples of seeds relating to the various groups of plants.

G. Mammadov noted that in the reporting year department institutions received grants from Science Development Fund under the President of Azerbaijan Republic, the European Commission, the US Department of Agriculture, Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Ukrainian Science and Technology Center.

Academician-Secretary of the Department added that last year, 3 people have defended thesis for the degree of PhD, and PhD theses of 8 individuals and a thesis for degree of Doctor of Sciences have been submitted for defense. In the reporting year, 421 scientific works, including 6 books, 2 monographs, 317 articles (132 - abroad) were published by department associates.

Further presentations were made on the report. Activities of the department in 2015 were highly appreciated.

The meeting also discussed the question of unification of the Institutions of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry with Erosion and Irrigation ANAS.
