On February 4, worldwide Azerbaijani scientist, inventor of the fuzzy theory, emeritus professor of the University of California, Berkeley, Lotfi Zadeh is 95 years old.
Lotfi Rahim oglu Alasgarzadeh was born in Baku, on February 4, 1921. Finished primary school N 16 here then was forced to move to South Azerbaijan with his family. Entered Faculty of Electrical engineering at University of Tehran, after graduating successfully came to United States at age of 23, continued his education at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He received an MS degree in electrical engineering from M.I.T. in 1946, and then applied to Columbia University, as his parents had settled in New York City. Columbia admitted him as a doctoral student, and offered him an instructorship as well. He received his PhD in electrical engineering from Columbia in 1949, and became an assistant professor the next year.
Zadeh taught for ten years at Columbia, was promoted to Full Professor in 1957, and has taught at the University of California, Berkeley since 1959. He published his seminal work on fuzzy sets in 1965, in which he detailed the mathematics of fuzzy set theory. In 1973 he proposed his theory of fuzzy logic.
In November 2008, he came to Baku in order to take part at “BakuTel” exhibition and conference of international telecommunication and information technologies. Also participated the event organized at Presidium of ANAS and was presented Honorary Diploma of ANAS for his merits in science.
Currently, Japanese "Mitsubishi", "Toshiba", "Sony", "Canon", "Sanyo", "Nissan", "Honda" companies widely use fuzzy logic technology in managing production of influential photo and video cameras, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, cars, trains, and industrial processes.
Note that L.Zadeh was honored the "Honda" - highest award of the Japanese scientists for their achievements in the industry, in 1989.
