On February 4, a regular meeting of the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences was held. At the event, was made a report on the results of the Department of Agrarian Sciences of ANAS in 2015.
On the scientific and organizational work carried out in the institutes attached to department during the year, Academician-Secretary of the department, Academician Garib Mammadov noted that, last year the main part of activities in the Department of Agrarian Sciences have been carried out in accordance with the Action Plan, adopted in connection with the declaration 2015 "Year of Agriculture" in Azerbaijan. Academician noted that work related to the "Year of Agriculture", were aimed at improving the scientific provision and training in the agricultural sector, and also covers the use of information technology in this field.
Academician also spoke about the human capacity of scientific institutions of the department. He noted that 298 researchers, 15 of whom are doctors of science, 184 - Doctor of Philosophy employ in the scientific institutes and organizations of the department, while there are 5 active members and 4 corresponding members of ANAS.
The speaker stressed that in the reporting year, the study on 44 subjects, covering 6 problems were held in the department institutions. Scientific institutions of the department and higher educational institutions were obtained 10 important results in the field of basic research. In addition, 421 articles and abstracts have been published, while 6 books and 2 monographs, 185 of them in abroad, including 45 - in journals with impact factor, works of the staff were cited 251 times.
Last year, admission to master studies on "Plant breeding" was organized at ANAS Institute of Genetic Resources.
Academician noted that in the reporting year, in addition to the government programs, works have been implemented special within scientific and technical program "Creating a sustainable system for the identification, storage, and sustainable use of plant genetic resources at the level of the genome and transcriptome" sponsored by ANAS. Under this program, the first time in Azerbaijan Institute of Genetic Resources of ANAS organized an international weekly training course "Application of new generation sequencers in the improvement of plants" that, along with other seminars and courses conducted at the institute, it was an important step in strengthening personnel training, and scientists and engineers’ possessing the necessary knowledge and skills in the field of contemporary trends in the development of agricultural science.
Scientific institutions of the department participated actively in exhibitions organized in 2015 "Year of Agriculture" in Azerbaijan, including the demonstration field trials. "Field days: Gabala-2015", organized in the allocated territory of ANAS due to display the latest innovations and opportunities in the agricultural sector, "Sultan" peas, "Sevinj" bean and "Zagatala 68" corn were planted via methods of ecological agriculture in the usual way and ozonized seeds. Also while demonstration were presented new organic fertilizers (vermicompost "Biomax" and "Bio-humus") and printing aids in agrucultyre of the department.
Further Academician Garib Mammadov spoke about the international scientific cooperation. He stressed that the institutions of the department collaborate with 14 foreign organizations and research centers from over 30 countries. The institutions visited by more than 150 well-known scientists from 12 international organizations from 45 countries. Cooperation in the field of soil science and erosion was established with scientific institutes and centers of Russia, Georgia, Turkey, Iran and other states, as well as with UNESCO. Department institutions received grants from the Science Development Fund under the President of Azerbaijan Republic, the European Commission, the Science and Technology Center in Ukraine, the University of Milan, the FAO organizations, CIMMYT, etc. Department is the organizer of two international conferences.
The event adopted a resolution approving the report of the scientific and organizational activity of ANAS Department of Agrarian Sciences in 2015 and its inclusion in the annual report of the Academy. The decision reflected the following items, as a multidisciplinary research using the latest technologies and the involvement of relevant scientific fields, etc.
