ANAS scientists discussed daylight saving time

On March, Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) held a meeting devoted to the scientific validity of the possible abolition of transition to daylight saving time on the territory of Azerbaijan.

The event was addressed by President of ANAS, Academician Akif Alizadeh, who noted that on the instructions of the head of state there would be considered the need to abolish the transition to daylight saving time in the country.

Academician-secretary of ANAS, Academician Rasim Alguliyev said that, a few year ago was decided abolish daylight saving time (DST) in the country. Speaking of world experience academician stated that, 78 countries uses DST, while there are no any changes in 161 ones. Azerbaijan is a small country located in an area where a single time zone, so switch to DST does not matter so much. 

Then, Deputy Director of Shamakhy Astrophysical Observatory, PhD in Physics Elchin Babayev made speech on his studies on daylight saving time, and brought to mind economic, social, psychological and political factors of this transformation. The report also states that during the transition to daylight saving time there are problems between neighboring countries, increasing the number of accidents and flight delays. It is noted that the countries of Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia do not have daylight saving time.

Director of the Institute of Zoology, corresponding member of ANAS Ilham Alakbarov stressed out that, daylight saving time is not of importance in terms of biological viewpoint, because astronomic time factor is mainstreamed in this matter.

Director of the Institute of Geography, Academician Ramiz Mammadov noted the significance of taken account the time transition of Azerbaijan, 4 degrees from north to south, 5 degrees from west to east.

Head scientific fellow of the Institute of Physics, PhD in physics Kamil Gurbanov also shared his opinions and was in favor of keeping current DST.

Vice-President of ANAS, Acaedmician Isa Habibbayli underpinned of keeping current daylight saving time from economic, moral-psychological view point.

Academician-Secretary of the Department of Earth Sciences, Academician Fakhraddin Gadirov said that, there are a large number of monitoring systems in Azerbaijan that work with Greenwich Mean Time. According to him, in order to avoid problems in the monitoring systems it is necessary to keep the current time.

In closing, President of ANAS A.Alizadeh highlighted of keeping daylight saving time, charged on scientific grounding of the adopted decision and send to Presidential Administration.
