Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

On March 16, jubilee event devoted to 80th anniversary of Honored Scientist, corresponding member of ANAS, Professor Agabey Sultanov, at the main building of ANAS.

Opening the event President of ANAS, Academician Akif Alizadeh highlighted Agabey Sultanov as one of the celebrate representatives of psychiatry school of Azerbaijan, highly appraised his fruitful performance and spoke about his merits in training of high qualified staff.

Notifying his authorship to over 200 articles, monographs, manuals and methodic aids published in the republic and abroad, ANAS President touched upon his social activity as well: “He was the chief psychiatrist of the World Federation of Psychiatrists, a member of Presidium of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences on Mental Health, a member of the Russian Commission Against Suicide Problem, chairman of the Defense Council at the Azerbaijan Medical University on psychiatry, neurology, otolaryngology and dentistry, a member of Problem Commission on Psychiatry and Neurology, including a member of Bioethics Commission of the National Academy of Sciences, and Editorial Board of the Medical Journal.”

Academician-Secretary of the Department of Biological and Medical Sciences, Academician Ahliman Amiraslanov stated that, scientist devoted his life and activity to Azerbaijan Medical University, worked there over 40 years. Speaking about the merits of the Chief Psychiatrist of Azerbaijan in the development of medical science, the academician added that in scientific works and textbooks, lectures and reports scholar reflected such topical issues as diagnosis, clinic and treatment of schizophrenia, which is considered the most difficult area of psychiatry, as well as the environmental impact to the human psyche, psychology of suicide, ethical foundations of medicine, euthanasia, etc.

Head of the Department noted that A.Sultanov was well known far beyond the borders of the Republic; he represented with dignity domestic science in France, Spain, Italy, Japan, Belgium and other countries, has been awarded honorary diplomas.

In his speech at the event, Head of the Department of Psychiatry of the Azerbaijan Medical University, Professor Geray Geraybeyli spoke about the scientific, pedagogical and public work of the scientist. Born in Baku in a family of intellectuals, A.Sultanov was known for his kindness, infinite devotion to the profession, caring attitude towards patients. Noting that in his time the scientist became the youngest professor of the Department of Psychiatry of the Azerbaijan Medical University, Geray Geraybeyli spoke about his teaching activities: "From the first years of teaching A.Sultanov demonstrated his high teaching abilities. Well knowing the Azerbaijani and world literature, the subtleties familiar with aspects of medicine, philosophy, ethics and deontology, feeling even unspoken side of the human soul, A.Sultanov handed students knowledge on literary and artistic, academic and, at the same time, in simple and intelligent language " .

Further, in their speeches, Head of the Department of Epidemiology of the Azerbaijan Medical University Ibadulla Agayev, Professor of the Department of Psychiatry of the Azerbaijan Medical University, Nadir Ismayilov, film director, People's Artist Ogtay Mirgasimov shared their memories about Agabey Sultanov.

At the event, a documentary was shown on the life and work of Agabey Sultanov.
