A literary and public meeting titled “Our Language – Our Identity,” dedicated to the protection and development of the Azerbaijani language, was held at the Natavan Club of the Azerbaijan Writers’ Union (AWU).
It was reported that the meeting was opened with introductory remarks by Elchin Huseynbeyli, Secretary of the AWU and Honored Art Worker. Recalling the speeches of the President of the country on the preservation and purity of the Azerbaijani language, he emphasized that this issue today carries special significance both in academic circles and in the public sphere. Elchin Huseynbeyli noted that from the late 19th century, the Azerbaijani Turkic language served as a leading language of communication and culture in the Caucasus, but was later marginalized due to certain historical and political reasons. However, during the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan has once again become a state with a strong voice in the region, and this process has also given a powerful impetus to the growing prestige of the Azerbaijani language. He confidently stated that in the near future, the Azerbaijani language will further strengthen its position as one of the leading languages of the region.
During the event, other speakers extensively discussed issues related to state language policy, norms of the literary language, terminological security, and the preservation of language culture in academic and artistic environments.
Those speaking at the event included AWU Chairman, People’s Writer Anar; academicians Isa Habibbeyli, Rafael Huseynov, Nizami Jafarov, Teymur Karimli, Kamal Abdulla, and Mukhtar Imanov; People’s Writers Chingiz Abdullayev and Elmira Akhundova; members of the Milli Majlis Elnara Akimova and Seyyad Aran; professors Nadir Mammadli, Telman Valikhanli, and Karim Tahirli; Editor-in-Chief of “Literature Newspaper” Azer Turan; Secretary of the Azerbaijan Writers’ Union for International Relations, poet and translator Salim Babullaoğlu; and Head of the Center for Literary Translation and Literary Relations Asad Jahangir. In their speeches, they noted that the protection of the Azerbaijani language is not only the responsibility of linguists, but the duty of society as a whole.
The meeting was marked by scholarly and literary discussions as well as relevant proposals.
