The remarks voiced by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at the event dedicated to the 80th anniversary of ANAS, as well as in his interview with local television channels on January 5, constituted a strategic call that clearly defined the direction for the present and future of the Azerbaijani language and marked a transition to a new stage in the state’s language policy.
These views were expressed by Rashad Majid, Chair of the Azerbaijan Press Council, during his speech at the conference titled “The Language of the Media in the Framework of Scientific Discussion,” jointly organized by ANAS and the Azerbaijan Press Council. He first highlighted the relevance and significance of the event dedicated to language issues and spoke about the established cooperation between the two institutions, noting that this partnership has made an important contribution to the development of media language.
Drawing attention to President Ilham Aliyev’s speech at the event marking the 80th anniversary of ANAS, Rashad Majid stated that the head of state emphasized the preservation of the purity of the Azerbaijani language as a key task and gave specific instructions in this regard. He also recalled the conference titled “Proper Application of the Norms of the Azerbaijani Literary Language in the Media,” jointly organized by ANAS, the Media Development Agency, and the Azerbaijan Press Council a few days after the President’s address at the Academy’s 80th anniversary. He noted that the main purpose of the event was to strengthen adherence to literary language norms in the media and to enhance speech culture.
The Chair of the Council pointed out that in both his speech at ANAS’s 80th anniversary and his interview with local television channels, the head of state underlined that journalists bear special responsibility in matters concerning the literary language, thereby placing greater obligations and duties on the media. Rashad Majid stressed that journalists and media representatives in general play a significant role in the development and preservation of the Azerbaijani language. Therefore, the proper, fluent, and norm-compliant use of the Azerbaijani language by media representatives is among their primary responsibilities.
He also provided information about the activities of the Language Commission of the Azerbaijan Press Council, stating that issues arising from President Ilham Aliyev’s views on language policy were discussed at a meeting of the Council’s Board held in 2025, and the composition of the Commission was restructured.
Rashad Majid added that at its first meeting in 2026, the Council approved the new composition of the Language Commission, which consists of 12 members, including well-known television journalists, TV presenters, scholars, media representatives, and experts.
Concluding his speech, he emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation with the institutes of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences in order to increase the effectiveness of the Commission’s activities, noting that the conference holds particular significance in this regard.
