The international scientific conference titled “Founders and Lessons of the First Turkological Congress: History and Modernity”, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the First Turkological Congress and held at the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), continued its work with panel sessions.
During the sessions, linguists, historians, ethnographers, literary scholars and cultural researchers representing Azerbaijan as well as Türkiye, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Russia, Hungary, Germany, Poland and Georgia presented the current challenges of Turkology from the perspectives of various academic schools.
At the panel titled “Ali Bey Huseynzade”, moderated by the Head of the Turkish Language Association, Prof. Osman Mert, and the Head of the Department of History and Archaeology at Khazar University, Assoc. Prof. Telman Nusratoglu, presentations were delivered on “A Gift to the 100th Anniversary of the Baku Turkological Congress: The Digital Library of the Turkic World – Turcology.com”, “The Stages in the Formation of the Göktürk Khaganate and Their Influence on the Modern Turkic World”, “Two Important Factors of the Turkological Congress: The Dream of Russian Bolshevism’s ‘World Proletarian Revolution’ and the ‘Cultural Revolution’ in the East”, “Evaluation of Research Conducted in Türkiye on Attila and the European Huns”, “Assessments on the Argus and the Arguca Based on the Divanü Lüğat-it-Türk”, and “Russia’s Colonial Language Policy Toward Turkic Peoples under the Tsarist and Soviet Regimes”.
At the panel session titled “Mahmud Kashgari”, moderated by Prof. Okan Yesilot of Marmara University (Türkiye) and Director of the Institute of Linguistics, Prof. Nadir Mammadli, reports were presented on “The Use of a Common Literary Language in the Press of Turkic Peoples in Russia (1883–1930)”, “The First Turkological Congress in Archival Documents”, “From the Congress to the Present Day: Studies in Turkic Etymology”, “The Place of the Turkological Congress in the Cultural War”, “A Proposal for Toponymy Research in the Historical Geography of Eurasia: The Example of Tabula (TIR and TIB)”, and “The 1926 Baku Turkology Congress: The Scope of Turkology and Interdisciplinary Boundaries”.
The presentations systematically reassessed the scientific legacy of the First Turkological Congress and proposed new methodological approaches for contemporary Turkological research.
It is planned to publish the conference materials in a collected volume.
It should be noted that the international scientific conference titled “Founders and Lessons of the First Turkological Congress: History and Modernity” represents an important academic event in terms of preserving the historical memory of Turkology and determining its future directions of development.
Participants of the conference will attend a symposium dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the First Turkological Congress at Khazar University on February 28.
