Seismostratigraphic and sequence-stratigraphic models of the Caspian Sea in the Pliocene discussed

On April 22, next assembly of Academic Council of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics was held.

Opening the assembly Deputy Director of Science of the Institute Dr. Geology-mineralogy Dadash Huseynov informed on the issues of agenda.

Then, Academician Parviz Mammadov made a presentation on “Analysis of precipitation accumulation and seismostratigraphic and sequence-stratigraphic models of the productive layer sediments in the Caspian Sea”. The lecturer noted that the use of modern and effective teaching tools at a high level, there is the study of theoretical and practical issues such as the genesis of productive strata, conditions for the accumulation of sediment in the early Pliocene, the area of formation of groups, paleogeography forms of sedimentary bodies, dependent on paleotectonic and eustatic factors, chronostratigraphic technique of separation and formation-fasial units within the productive formations and others.

It was noted that research and grant projects implemented by oil companies Chevron and BP's, Delft, Cambridge and the University of Texas, inclduing the Moscow State University in cooperation with the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS. One of the practical results of the research is the identification and mapping of non-anticlinal traps in the areas of productive reservoir seepage groups.

The report, which aroused great interest among the participants of the seminar, was adopted in accordance with the decision of the Academic Council.

Further presentations were made in connection with the progress of scientific and organizational work. Research works "Development in the field of methods of calculation of oil field development studies and economic issues in view of the complex deformation patterns of rocks", "Comprehensive analysis of geological and geophysical parameters fields of the South Caspian Basin and oil and gas reserves distribution characteristics", and "Evaluation of the geological threat in the South Caspian basin” were discussed.

The meeting ended with a discussion of staffing and other issues.
