Cave settlements of 5 thousand years revealed in the north-east of Azerbaijan

In the course of archaeological excavations carried out in the territory of Shabran region, have been revealed cave settlements of 5 thousand years old history.

The archaeological finds discovered on the monument Chaggaltepe in the village Aygunlu belong to the Kura-Araz culture. This monument, dating back to the end of IV - beginning of III millennium BC, is the oldest settlement discovered in northeast Azerbaijan.

The head of the Shabran archaeological expedition of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Safar Ashurov said that the cultural layer of the monument is very thick. In this area, the ancient settlement was registered in the 70-ies of the last century. There are three ancient hills in the territory.

During the preliminary investigations in the monuments were revealed characteristic features of early Bronze Age Kur-Araz culture. Archaeological excavations have helped to define the features of the construction of 3, which were used in the monument Chaggaltepe. The first feature, in the territory of 5 cave settlements related to the early Bronze Age was discovered (such settlements have not been studied in Azerbaijan). Second, building on the clay walls of houses with a wooden cover (these constructions are typical for this region). A third characteristic feature is the construction of circular houses on stone foundations.

The head of the expedition noted that most of the materials discovered during excavations in the territory of the monument, composed of ceramic. This is one of the main factors with the help of which it is possible to determine the history of the monument. Most of the ceramic samples are ceramics with handles hemispheric shape, which are considered the main attributes of the Early Bronze Age.

During the excavations and flint tools were found arrowheads. This is proof that at the end of IV - the beginning of the III millennium BC, along with agriculture and cattle breeding locals also engaged in hunting.

Bone awls and needles, discovered in the territory, reports about formation of weaving here.
