Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

Today, a celebrate geophysicist-scientist of Azerbaijan, chief of Seismostratigraphy department of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics Academician Parviz Mammadov is 80 years old.

Parviz Mammadov was born on January 12, 1937 in Baku city. In 1954 he finished Baku city secondary school N 31 with silver medal and entered Azerbaijan Industry Institute (present Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University). In 1959, he graduated from here with diploma of honors and since this year worked at the Azerbaijan Scientific-Research Institute as a technician-operator, a radio mechanic, engineer and geophysicist, also as a senior engineer.

In 1967, he gained PhD degree in geology-mineralogy, doctoral degree in 1992, and title of professor in 1993. In 2001, he was elected a corresponding member of ANAS and active member in 2014.

Scientist worked as an assistant, associate professor, professor, department head, vice-rector for scientific work of the Department of Geophysical Exploration Methods of Azerbaijan State Oil Academy since 1968, in 1993-1997 worked as the rector but currently, works as a consultant - professor to the same organization. Meanwhile, he chairs for Seismostratigraphy Department of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics.

P.Mammadov is widely known scientist in an international arena. For the first time he investigated dynamic investigations of dynamic characterizations of seismic waves, seismostratigraphic investigation of South Caspian mega basin, held investigations of sedimentary bodies and oil/gas sedimentary complexes, and exploration of non-anticline traps of oil and gas. He was a research director and performer of international scientific projects (INTAS, CRDF, evolution of basins MEBE-Middle East and DARIUS).

P.Mammadov is an author of almost 240 scientific works. His works are many referred to the domestic and foreign journals. Academician supervised to 3 Doctors of Sciences and 10 PhDs.

Scientist is a member of American Workers Association, an honorary member of the International Geophysical Society, a member of European Geologist and Engineers Association, an active member of International Engineering Academy (Moscow) and International Academy of Sciences (Vienna, Austria), Deputy Academician-Secretary of the Department of Earth Sciences ANAS, Deputy Chairman of the Dissertation Council attached to the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, etc.

P.Mammadov has been awarded Certificate of Honors by the Ministry of Education and Presidium of ANAS for his efficient scientific-pedagogical activity. In 2005, by the decision of Eurasia Geophysicists’ Association he has been included in the encyclopedia “Notable Russian Geophysicists". As a first azerbaijanian scientist he awarded the medal “Notable geophysicist S.G.Komarov” in 2010. While in 2016, he was deserved to Prize of ANAS after Academician Musa Aliyev for his fundamental outputs in study geological depth structure of the Earth via geophysical methods and long-termed pedagogical activity.
