A scientific conference on the theme "Khojaly in the history of genocide against the Azerbaijani people" was held in Sumgait State University (SGU) with the joint organizational support of the higher education institution and the Institute of History of ANAS named A.A.Bakihanov on 22 February.
Opening the event, University Rector, Professor Elkhan Huseynov noted that Khojaly massacre, in its cruelty has left a trail of blood in the history of mankind. Genocide committed in the night from 25 to 26 February 1992 in Khojaly, is one of the bloodiest tragedies in the history of mankind. The atrocities committed by Armenian aggressors will never be erased from memory.
Rector noted that the Azerbaijani state is taking all the necessary steps to inform the world community of the truth about the Khojaly tragedy, as well as recognition of the tragedy as an act of genocide against our people. The purposeful work in this area began after the return of Heydar Aliyev to political power in Azerbaijan. At the initiative of the great leader of the Khojaly genocide was given political and legal assessment, 26 February was declared "Day of Khojaly genocide".
E.Huseynov gave detailed information about the success of a consistent and purposeful policy pursued by President Ilham Aliyev in the direction of recognition in the international arena of Khojaly tragedy as an act of genocide, as well as the importance of international advocacy campaign "Justice for Khojaly!", started in 2008 at the initiative of Vice -President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva.
Director of the Institute of History, corresponding member of ANAS Yagub Mahmudov noted that one of the important directions of research conducted in the institution headed by him, is to study the history of the genocide carried out by Armenians against our people. In the last decade in the Institute of History of the different countries of the world reflecting the large number of genocides have been delivered, committed against our people, archival documents, which were later published in a collection.
Y.Mahmudov stressed that Armenia has committed Khojaly genocide not only against the Azerbaijani people, but of all mankind.
The event also heard reports by dean of the Faculty of History and Geography of SSU, professor Adil Bakhshaliyeva "The greatest tragedy of the XX century - the Khojaly genocide", Deputy Director for Science, Institute of History, PhD in History Jabi Bahramov "The deportation of Azerbaijanis in 1948-1953, - is a genocide crime", head department of Modern and Contemporary History of Europe and America of the SSU Professor Shirkhan Salimov “Genocide committed by Armenians in Shamakhi (1918)" and Ph.D. in History Guntekin Najafli “Genocide committed in Azerbaijan and Eastern Anatolia in the new archival document ".
