A new approach to reducing damage caused by natural disasters

A new approach to reducing damage caused by natural disasters

Institute of Geology and Geophysics held a regular meeting of the Department of Earth Sciences of ANAS on April 18.

Opening the event, Academician-Secretary of the Department, Academician Fakhraddin Gadirov acquainted participants about the issues on the agenda. The scientist said that, the meeting is devoted to the discussion of seismic hazard, earthquakes and natural disasters.

Then the professor of the University of Karlsruhe of Germany, the secretary general of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics Alik Ismail-Zadeh presented the report "Seismic danger, earthquakes and natural disasters: can they be predicted?". It was noted that, the level of ground oscillations recorded in epicentral zones in digital form is higher than the level of oscillations determined for design buildings on the basis of calculation by means of simple point algorithms.

A.Ismayil-Zadeh noted that, a new approach to the integral analysis of risks arising from earthquakes and other threats was put forward: "The new approach is aimed at a more detailed study of natural phenomena and sustainability. The approach provides for the preparation of a package of recommendations for reducing damage caused by natural phenomena".

Then the reports were discussed and answers were given to the participants' questions.

At the event the report of the doctoral candidate of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics Kanan Abbasov on the project "Geological Characterization of Metal Ore Deposits in the Balkans", jointly funded by UNESCO and Poland was listened.

In conclusion, a number of current issues were considered.
