The first summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Science and Technology started its work in Kazakhstan's capital Astana on September 10.
The summit was organized in accordance with the initiative President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev in April of last year at the XIII summit of the OIC in Istanbul.
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has attended the summit. In his speech, the Head of State praised the organization of the first Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on science and technology. Stressing that Azerbaijan is an active member of the OIC, the head of state said that in recent years about 10 meetings of foreign ministers, culture, tourism, education, labor and other ministers of the organization were held in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan will continue its contribution to the strengthening of Islamic solidarity as an active member of the OIC, Mr. President noted.
Speaking at the event, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela Nikolas Maduro and other foreign officials valued the Summit topics as important step for the development of society.
It was noted that the development of science and technology contribute greatly to the prosperity of our countries, as well as the global economy. In this regard, the role of international co-operation is crucial to supporting important discoveries and achievements.
Astana Declaration intended to start political support process for the scientific and technological development of the Islamic world was adopted at the event.
Within the framework of the summit sessions will be held on topics such as "The role of science and technology in sustainable development", "Competitiveness and innovation in modern economy", "Development of cooperation in science and technology", discussions on development issues in science, education, technology.
The two-day ECO Summit on science and technology will have about 80 delegates from state and government ministers, science and technology ministers, observer countries, as well as international organizations from 57 member states.
President of ANAS, academician Akif Alizadeh also attends the summit.
