Opened the V International Symposium on Azerbaijan Carpet

The V International International Symposium on Azerbaijan Carpets was held at International Mugam Center on October 18.

The event was organized under the relevant decree of President Ilham Aliyev “On holding the V International Azerbaijan Carpet Symposium in Baku city”.

Initially, the guests got acquainted with the exhibition of carpet weaving in the foyer of the center.

Minister of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan Abulfas Garayev spoke about the importance of the symposium, the relevance of the issues to be discussed, care and attention to carpet art, and the creation of a modern carpet museum in our country.

Speaking about the event, the minister said that in accordance with the 5th International Carpets Symposium, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, ANAS and "Azerkhalcha" Open Stock Company (OSC) have prepared a plan of action. The symposium is attended by leading carpet art professionals representing about 25 countries.

"Azerbaijan's carpet art today has been included in UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage" said Abulfas Garayev, who emphasized that, working on promoting the Azerbaijani carpet art in the international arena are continuing successfully.

Then, vice-president of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbeyli spoke about scientific researches in the direction of studying and popularization of Azerbaijani carpet art. He said that the carpet art is studied in several directions in ANAS. In recent years scientists of the academy have made important works in this direction and published scientific works. In 2016, as a result of joint efforts of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS and "Azerhalcha" OJSC, the Carpet Center was launched. In the short period of time, the Center has published two major research works.

Vice President of ANAS expressed confidence that today's event will contribute to the development of carpet weaving science and will create new bridges between carpet weavers and world-renowned researchers.

Chairman of the Board of "Azərkhalça" OJSC, Professor Vidadi Muradov expressed gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev and First Vice President of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva for organizing such an event in Azerbaijan, one of the oldest and rich carpet weaving centers in the world.

V.Muradov said that the symposium was an event of exceptional importance in world carpet weaving. The Azerbaijani carpet is internationally recognized and accepted worldwide. The symposium will help introduce the Azerbaijani carpet and get acquainted with the history of carpet weaving.

At the event, the Chairperson of the Academic Committee of ICCO Alberto Boralevi, Chairman of ICOC Executive Committee Vandel Svan, Scientific Worker at the Museum of Islamic Art, Director of “Hali Publicition Limited” Michael Francis made speeches at the symposium.

At the end, Michael Francis presented his book "Caucasian stars: patterns of Azerbaijan in the XVI-XVIII centuries" to Abulfas Garayev, Minister of Culture and Tourism. The book contains extensive information about the ancient Azerbaijani buildings, the Ottoman era, khanates in Azerbaijan and the 19th century Azerbaijani carpet art.

The symposium will continue until October 21.
