ANAS Central Scientific Library held international conference on "Training on network management systems and seismic analytical tools" on October 23.
The event, conducted by the organizational support of ANAS Republican Seismic Survey Center, Ukrainian Center for Science and Technology, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, US Department of Energy and US Seismological Research Center (SRC), seismologists from more than 20 countries took part.
Opening the event, ANAS President, Academician Akif Alizadeh noted the significance of the conference in terms of strengthening cooperation and mutual exchange of experience between seismologists of various countries. Talking about the history of the development of seismological science in Azerbaijan and the important studies conducted in this direction, scientist noted that, in the last 50-60 years seismological studies in our country have acquired an intensive character. It was brought to the attention that, the seismological observations conducted in the republic and the seismic service is constantly in the center of the state's attention. As a result of the studies conducted to date, the seismic regime in Azerbaijan has been determined, mud volcano links have been linked to seismicity, bottom seismographs have been purchased to study the seismicity of the Caspian.
Informing about the successes achieved in the field of seismology in Azerbaijan, the head of ANAS noted that, right after the earthquake that occurred in November 2000 in Baku, following the order of the great leader Heydar Aliyev, a tender was announced in the republic in order to modernize the seismic service in the republic and for the Republican Center Seismological Service initially purchased 14 sets of telemetric seismic stations operating on the basis of the telemetric satellite service of the company Kinemetriks USA. The scientist said that, at present 35 telemetric seismic stations are functioning in Azerbaijan and wished success to the work of the conference.
Speaking then, Deputy Minister for Emergency Situations of the Republic of Azerbaijan (MES), Lieutenant-General of Medical Service Faig Taghizadeh, stressing the importance of the event, expressed his confidence that scientific discussions on seismology will make a great contribution to solving the problems existing in this area in our country. Touching upon the issue of cooperation between the Ministry of Emergency Situations and ANAS, F.Tagizade said that currently the two entities conducted joint research to the study of natural and anthropogenic processes, and other threats. He brought to attention that according to the relevant Order of President Ilham Aliyev, ANAS in conjunction with the Ministry of Emergencies prepared for publication the "Atlas of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Azerbaijan".
At the event, head of the US Department of Energy's program, Wanderer, gave detailed information on the activities and future plans of the structure he represented.
Then, Director of the Republican Seismic Survey Center, correspondent member of ANAS Gurban Etirmishli delivered a report on "The modern seismogeodynamic state of Azerbaijan". Talking about the history of the beginning of seismic observations in Azerbaijan, scientist reported that, 22 GPS stations were installed on the territory of the republic, technical equipment and instruments of the geophysics and geochemistry departments of the center were updated.
G.Etirmishli noted that, improvement of the quality of complex research conducted in the RCSD arouses great interest of organizations that carry out activities in foreign countries. The center cooperates with seismological centers of more than 20 foreign countries.
During the conference, the following topics will be discussed: seismic wave data management tools developed by the joint research institutes for seismology, ObsPy Phyton - a tool for seismology, the SeisComp3 is a data collection and processing tool, the ILoc is a tool for locating seismic events.
The International Seismological Conference will end on October 27.
