Prominent scientist in the field of chemistry of coordination compounds, Shohrat Order, head of the department and head of the laboratory of the Institute of Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry, academician Ajdar Akbar oglu Mejidov is 80th on March 6.

Ajdar Majidov was born on March 6, 1938 in Baku. In 1960 he graduated from the chemical faculty of the Baku State University.

In 1966 he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry, in 1984 - Doctor of Chemical Sciences, in 1985 - the academic title of Professor. In 2001 he was elected a corresponding member of ANAS, and in 2017 - a full member of ANAS.

In 1964-1969 worked at the Institute of Molecular Biology of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In the years 1969-1988. He worked as a laboratory manager at the Institute of Petrochemical Processes of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR, and since 1988 has been working at the Institute of Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry. At present, the scientist occupies the position of head of department and head of the laboratory of this institute.

Scientists for the first time synthesized crystalline complex compounds of metals with paramagnetic ligands (Schiff bases, carboxylate, xanthate, etc.) containing stable nitroxide radicals. Their crystal and molecular structure was studied, the distances between the paramagnetic centers were determined: the energies of exchange interactions between the spin centers in these systems were first computed and estimated. It is shown that the entry of a radical center (nitroxyl) into the coordination sphere of a metal ion (divalent copper) leads to its activation in oxidation-reduction reactions. The kinetics and mechanism of oxidation-reduction reactions of stable radicals with aromatic amines and diamines with the formation of radical cations have been studied. A new reaction of the oxidative combination in copper salicylaldiminates has been discovered, proceeding in coordinated ligands.

In recent years, A.A.Mejidov carried out work on obtaining new coordination compounds, studying their X-ray structure and reactivity. The kinetics and mechanism of the reaction of oxidative dehydrogenation of coordinated o-hydroxybenzylamines and the reduction of the coordinated azomethine bond have been studied. A new hydrothermal method for the reduction of nitrates has been developed to produce nanoscale powders of metals, oxides and carbonates.

Scientist-chemist is the author of more than 220 scientific works and 25 author's certificates. Under his leadership, 1 doctor of science and 18 doctors of philosophy were trained.

In addition to scientific activity, A. Mejidov was engaged in pedagogical activity. In 1992-1998 he lectured at the Baku State University, and then at the Istanbul University (Marmara).

For scientific and pedagogical activity the scientist was awarded with the Certificate of Honor of the Ministry of Chemical Industry of the USSR, Medal "For Selfless Labor" and the Certificate of Honor of the Presidium of ANAS.

Scientific researches of academician Ajdar Mejidov are also highly appreciated by the international scientific community. He is a member of the International Society for Paramagnetic Resonance.
