Institute of Geography (IG) named after H.Aliyev hosted an event dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces.

Opening the event, Deputy Director of the Institute on Scientific Affairs, PhD in Geography Maharram Hasanov said that this year in our country the strongest army of the South Caucasus celebrated the 100th anniversary of the formation of Armed Forces of Azerbaijan. According to the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) dated June 26, 1918, under the leadership of General Aliaga Shikhlinski, the first regular army unit, 5000 personal staff, "Special Azerbaijani Corps" was established.

He said that the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense was abolished after the collapse of the ADR in 1920 and that all his functions were given to the People's Military Commissariat.

On May 22, 1998, national leader Heydar Aliyev proclaimed June 26 as the Day of Armed Forces, the scientist noted.

Chairman of the Trade Union Committee of IG, PhD in Geography Habil Hagverdiyev, head of the department, PhD in agricultural sciences Anvar Aliyev, chairman of Yasamal district organization of "Garabagh war invalids, veterans and martyr families" Public Association Bahram Sheydaev, Head of the Department of History of Azerbaijan Technical University, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Shikar Gasimov and others noted that the Azerbaijani Armed Forces led by the Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev turned the Azerbaijani Armed Forces into the most powerful army in the region and was a source of confidence and pride of our people.

The medal "For Homeland" for martyr Elkhan Mammadov was presented to the employee of the Institute of Geography, Gulshan Mammadova.

Later, mother of the martyr G.Mammadova thanked the management of the institute for the attention and care shown to her son.
