On February 26-27, 2019 an international conference was held in Dagestan devoted to the life and work of the world-famous Orientalist scholar, first dean of the Oriental Languages Department of the Imperial St. Petersburg University Mirza Muhammad Ali Kazim (1802-1870).
The conference was attended by historians and orientalists from Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Yemen and other countries of the world. Our country was represented by Deputy Director of the ANAS Institute of Oriental Studies after academician Z.Buniyatov, academician Shahin Mustafayev and head of the Department of the Institute, Ph.D. in History Farda Asadov.
Sh.Mustafayev delivered a report on “Research by Mirza Kazim on history of Turkic peoples”, which was one of the Russian orientalists of the past who created a scientific school that took the leading place in the world science of the East in the late 19th and 20th centuries and continued its best traditions in the new century.
The report of F.Asadov noted that in the book “Derbendname” written in 1850 by Mirza Kazm were highlighted some important points of history and explanations of terms. The works of both students were met with great interest, discussions were held around them.
Academician Sh.Mustafayev also took part in the program on Dagestan state television channel, where he spoke about the life and work of a prominent orientalist.
