New biotechnological innovations of Azerbaijani scientist would be applied in our country

At today's meeting of ANAS Presidium, corresponding member of ANAS, Professor of Akdeniz University (Turkey) Tarlan Mammadov delivered a scientific report on "Synthesis of therapeutic proteins and vaccines in green leaves of plants by co-expression of the human furin protein gene".

Professor Tarlan Mammadov said that, currently under his leadership at Akdeniz University, work continues on the synthesis of a wide range of various recombinant proteins, vaccines, therapeutic proteins, antibodies against cancer and various infectious diseases, food additives, industrial enzymes, as well as their production in the green leaves of plants.

Tarlan Mammadov spoke about the successful results of scientific research that he conducts in this field. The professor also said that vaccines against anthrax and malaria were synthesized in plants, tests of these vaccines on animals have already been completed, at present these works are at the stage of commercialization.

Speaking about his new invention, Tarlan Mammadov noted that, for a number of reasons the plant expression system has limitations for the production of human proteins.

According to Tarlan Mammadov, as a result of his recent research, the functionally active human furin protein was successfully synthesized for the first time in plants. Also, co-expression of the human furin gene with the genes of the target proteins was performed in plant cells, and as a result, active target proteins were synthesized inside the cell.

Further, Tarlan Mammdov also spoke about the invention of the technology for the activation of target proteins inside the cell, which for the first time in the world provided the synthesis of protective antigen in plants inside the cell in the form of a heptamer, and this antigen is a candidate for a new vaccine against anthrax.

A new candidate vaccine has more stable properties against this disease. The speaker said that, the aforementioned technology is important for the synthesis of various proteins, antibodies and vaccines and will bring great economic benefits.

He added that the obtained important results were confirmed as a new international patent and in March 2019 were published by the authoritative journal “PLOS ONE”.

Further, academician Ahliman Amiraslanov, corresponding member of ANAS Oktay Gasimov, Ph.D. in Biology, Associate Professor Alamdar Mammadov, PhD in Biology Saadat Khudaverdiyeva, Doctor in Biology Arif Mehdiyev, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Akif Gurbanov, Doctor in Biology, Associate Professor Saib Gullahmadov and others shared their opinions and recommendations.

The report has been well received by Presidium. Instructions were given related to the testing of innovative products for the synthesis and production of vaccines, therapeutic proteins, antibodies, industrial enzymes and food additives in green leaves of plants based on new biotechnology, as well as with the preparation of applications for their application.
