Later, the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Bahar Muradova spoke about the establishment of the Independence Day. She recalled that in the first years of independence, along with the deep political, economic and social crisis, Azerbaijan faced Armenia's military aggression and ethnic cleansing policy against our people. It was noted that on May 28, 1918, in the Muslim East for the first time, Azerbaijan gained state independence and established a democratic republic. Unfortunately, our democratic state only lasted 23 months. But for many years the wishes of the people for freedom and independence were not shaken. Finally, 70 years later, on October 18, 1991, Azerbaijan regained its independence. In Azerbaijan, where serious problems existed for the first time, the national leader Heydar Aliyev persistently regained power, and as a result of the thoughtful and far-sighted policy of the genius leader, our country regained its independence.
B. Muradova underlined that as a result of policy pursued by national leader Heydar Aliyev, formation of ideology of nationalism and Azerbaijanism, the legal and social basis of our state was formed in a short period of time, its independence was strengthened and serious steps were taken to integrate into the world community. Political and economic course laid by the great leader is being continued by President Ilham Aliyev, and reforms in all areas of public life, has shifted the Azerbaijan into one of the strong countries of the world.
"Today no major project in the region can be implemented without the participation and consent of Azerbaijan," said the Deputy Speaker, referring to the beginning of oil export via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan main export pipeline, implemented under the Contract of the Century. He said that this pipeline plays an important role in ensuring security in the South Caucasus and in the prosperity of our people.
