In connection with the 30th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy, commemorative events were held in the Institutes of Chemistry of Additives, Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry under Division of Chemical Sciences of ANAS.
The commemorative event, organized by the New Azerbaijan Party of the scientific organization at the Institute of Chemistry, Free Trade Union Organization, Women's Council and Council of Young Scientists and Specialists, was first commemorated martyrs’ with a minute of silence.
The director of the institute academician Vagif Farzaliyev said that, January 20 tragedy once again demonstrated criminal nature of the totalitarian Soviet regime to the whole world on the eve of its collapse.
The head of the institute said that people from all walks of life - students, teachers, scientists - were killed in those bloody events. Professors Ibrahim Ibrahimov, Ismayil Mursagulov, Svetlana Mammadova, who are considered as brilliant representatives of Azerbaijani science were killed and Idris Ahmadov and Parlag Mammadova were seriously injured.
Chairman of the Trade Union of the Institute, Doctor of Chemical Sciences Elkhan Isakov, who delivered a lecture on ”January 20 is a symbol of Azerbaijan's unwavering determination and will", expressed his desire for freedom of national independence. The reporter stressed that the January 20 events were assessed politically after the second return of national leader Heydar Aliyev to power.
The commemorative event on the 30th anniversary of the tragedy at the Institute of Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry was opened by Muhammad Babanli, deputy director of science corresponding member of ANAS. He gave information about the causes of the January 20 events and the results that led to it, noting that this bloody event is one of the pages of honor and heroism in the history of Azerbaijan's freedom struggle.
Then Arif Afandi, head of the Trade Union of the Institute, laboratory head Prof. Fikrat Sadigov and others shared their painful memories of the January 20 incidents and said that the memories of our brave sons and daughters who sacrificed their lives for independence will never be forgotten.
