Investigated hazard risk of Otmanbozdagh Volcano

Investigated hazard risk of Otmanbozdagh Volcano

Employees of the Mud Volcanism Department of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS investigated the risk of danger located in the Garadagh region of the Otmanbozdagh volcano, one of the largest and most active mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan.

The study was conducted in accordance with the agreement concluded between “Norm” LLC and the institute. Thus, in 2017 and 2018, a two-phase volcanic eruption was recorded, which created a risk of danger for the gas distribution station owned by “Norm” LLC.

During the study, the state of tension of the site where the Otmanbozdagh volcano is located was investigated, and the direction of the earth's crust, as well as tectonic dislocations, was determined. The flow rate of the mud ejected as a result of paroxysm was calculated, the pattern for the potential directions of the breccia flow ejected from the eastern and western eruptive centers was established, and their maximum limits of movement were indicated.

As a result of comprehensive studies, potential risk was assessed and it was recommended that the gas distribution station be moved to another location.
