97.5% of plains between Samur-Absheron are exposed to degradation

Institute of Geography of ANAS held a seminar on "Natural and anthropogenic degradation of the plains between Samur-Absheron plains in various ecosystems and their efficient use”.

Speaking at the event, Ismayil Guliyev, head department, Ph. D. in Agrarian Sciences, stated that along with natural factors, reducing of grazing and pasture areas, increasing of rainfalls, burning of grass during the summer season, and lack of using modern irrigation methods, have exposed arid littoral Caspian lands, between Samur and Absheron region, to degradation. Failure to take measures to protect the surrounding areas from sand storms and erosion, oil extraction, stone quarrying, industrial-selenium complexes, and the expansion of the road network also contributed to this problem, the scientist noted.

I.Guliyev said that, as to results, basing on tables, schemes and maps, soil vegetation, water and wind erosion and population density were determined. According to him, 250,5 ha (61,4% of the total area) of lands between Samur-Absheron was severe and very severe exposed to degradation, 129,6 ha (31,3% of the total area) mildly, and 20.911 ha (total area). 4.8% of the area) poorly, generally 97,5% of the total surface area being degraded to varying degrees.

He submitted a comprehensive action plan at the end of his speech.
