Statement of the President of ANAS, academician Ramiz Mehdiyev

As you know, the wedding celebration of my granddaughter Fidan Aliyeva, which took place on August 18, 2020 in a country house in Novkhani with the participation of a limited number of guests, became the topic of discussion after a video posted on social networks by one of the guests on August 20. I want to note that in those days, other high-ranking Azerbaijani officials and well-known persons in the society also organized weddings and birthdays for their daughters, sisters and other close relatives. But it is very strange that the media attention is focused on my family. Of course, the position of the relevant authorities on what happened is correct. Because everyone is equal before the law. I also think the court's decision about my son-in-law is just. Administrative penalties for other guests present at the celebration are also provided for by law. However, it is also true that during the pandemic, no one who held weddings, engagements, or committed administrative offenses was handcuffed and defiantly presented before a judge. The reason for this double standard is truly mysterious. I want to believe that law enforcement agencies, the media, parliamentarians and public figures will treat such events with the same sensitivity and integrity, handcuff all those responsible and give them valuable advice on the rule of law. In this case, questions and doubts of ordinary citizens about the rule of law in the country will completely disappear.

Historical experience shows that the progress, strength and future of any state depend on the equality of its citizens before the law. If in any society a group of people has become privileged due to their positions and financial opportunities and can circumvent the law, it is impossible to talk about justice, truthfulness or humanity. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said in one of his hadiths: “O people! Tribes have perished before you. Because when noble and wealthy people from these tribes stole, no one punished them. However, when a poor man did it, he was immediately punished. By Allah, even if my daughter Fatima had committed theft, I would have cut off her hand. "

As for me, I do not take offense at journalists and MPs who are excessive in their criticism. They, as always, act and speak according to the situation. I am ready with the same patience to listen to those who praised me yesterday and criticize me today. However, these people should not forget that the struggle of Mr. President for the rule of law is relevant for them, and everyone will certainly face the harsh side of the law. I would also advise these people to look in the mirror before throwing stones at someone. Let them wonder if they are pure enough to criticize others? Do they have the moral right to teach others a moral lesson? If we really strive for transparency, then honest people will be fairer to criticize unclean ones. The fact that the wicked are teaching a moral lesson to the people can only disgust people. Don't forget about this!
