Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

ANAS Institute of Petrochemical Processes held republican scientific-practical conference for oil-chemical synthesis dedicated to Honored Scientist of Azerbaijan academician Soltan Mehdiyev’s 100th anniversary. Conference aimed at encouraging the role of prominent scientist in development of oil-chemistry science.

Opening the event director of the event acad. Vagif Abbasov provided information about life and rich creativity of scientist.

Later on, corresponding member of ANAS Hafiz Alimardanov delivered lecture about the academician. S. Mehdiyev finished Baku Pedagogical College in 1927-31, worked as a teacher in the village school, graduated from Azerbaijan State University department of chemistry in 1939. During the Second World War he had developed extracting of some military explosives. Defended PhD thesis in Tbilisi (1943), doctoral thesis in Moscow (1955) on topic “Synthesis and transformations of cyclane hydrocarbons”. Became director of Azerbaijan Oil Institute in 1956-58. Elected corresponding member of Azerbaijan AS in 1958, active member in 1968. S. Mehdiyev supervised 10 doctors of sciences and 75 PhDs. Deserved for “Honored Scientists of Azerbaijan” in 1979.

Academicians Abel Maharramov, Akif Azizov, Vagif Farzaliyev, corresponding member Fezile Samadova, Dr. Chemistry Arif Hasanov and others shared their memories with scientist.

Finally, son of academician Jafar Mehdiyev spoke on behalf of his family and expressed his gratitude to the event organizers and attendees.
