Azerbaijani flora in a new era: a journey into the future

The territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan has a unique and rich flora. There are 4961 species of 1117 genus of higher plants, including cultivated plants. Although Azerbaijan covers about 16% of the Caucasus, it is 70% in terms of flora (6350 species) (Caucasian flora abstract, 2006).

Over the last 30 years, 20% of Azerbaijani lands have been occupied. The mountainous areas of the Lesser Caucasus consist of 6 ranges, but the flora of half of them (Karabakh, Zangazur and Daralayaz ranges) has been fighting to the death for many years. Azerbaijan is divided into 20 botanical-geographical regions in the floristic division: around the Caspian Sea (1200 species), Absheron (1000), Gobustan (1200), Kur-Araz lowland (1215), Kura plain (1205), Bozdag range (1190), Lankaran-Mugan (1500), mountainous part of Lankaran (1107), Diabar - Zuvand (1107), Lankaran lowland (1205), Nakhchivan plain (1175), mountainous part of Nakhchivan (2700), Samur - Devechi lowland (1145), Greater Caucasus - Guba Mountain range (1700), east of the Greater Caucasus (1205), west of the Greater Caucasus (1105), north of the Lesser Caucasus (1203), center of the Lesser Caucasus (1316), south of the Lesser Caucasus (1250), Alazan-Ayrichay valley (1100).
