April 16, Baku hosts international conference on “Islamic enlightenment and modernity”, jointly organized by the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Caucasian Muslims Office and the State Committee for Work with Religious Associations (state committee).
The event was attended by state and government officials, MPs, religious leaders, heads of accredited in our country, the diplomatic corps, academics, representatives of the media.
President of ANAS, academician Akif Alizadeh said that, purpose of the conducting the conference is to consolidate the efforts of scientists and experts in the field of science and religion in order to achieve mutual understanding and agreement and problems caused by the emergence of trends of extremism, terrorism, Islamophobia . In this context, the role of Islamic enlightenment is of great importance.
Along with Azerbaijani scientists event, was attended by delegates from Turkey, Russia, Iran, France, Germany, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Morocco, Sweden, Finland, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Academician A. Alizadeh emphasized the particular importance of the event and wished success to the conference and its participants.
State Advisor of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Ethnic Affairs, multiculturalism and religion Kamal Abdullayev delivered a message from President Ilham Aliyev to the participants of the conference.
The event was also attended by the chairman of the Caucasian Muslims Office Sheikh ul-Islam Allahshukur Pashazadeh, the chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations (SCWRO) Mubariz Gurbanli, Deputy Minister of Islamic Affairs of Kuwait Adel Al-Falah, Adviser to the Minister of Islamic Affairs and Diplomacy Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Majed Abdulaziz Al-Turki, director of the Institute for Studies of the Caucasus in Stockholm Svante Cornell, vice-president of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences Bahram Abduhalimov who noted the importance of the event and wished success to its work.
After the plenary session, conference continued its work in three sections. 60 reports of Azerbaijani, Russian, English and Arabic languages were delivered at the meetings in the sections of “Value of Islamic enlightenment in a globalizing world”, “The international significance of multiculturalism, inter-religious dialogue and tolerant environment and the role of Azerbaijan in this process”, “Religions of the World against the manifestations of terrorism, extremism, separatism and xenophobia”.
The conference will conclude on April 17.
