The ceremony of awarding the “Gold medal named after Nizami Ganjavi of the Republic of Azerbaijan” was held at a Special meeting of the Presidium of ANAS dedicated to the activities implemented at the Academy within the framework of the “Year of Nizami Ganjavi” and the upcoming tasks.
It was reported at the event that the gold medal, which bears the name of the brilliant Azerbaijani poet and thinker Nizami Ganjavi, whose 880th anniversary is celebrated this year, was established by the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 16, 2014. By the decree of the Head of State Ilham Aliyev dated June 27, 2014, the right to award this medal was passed to the Presidium of ANAS.
It was noted that taking into account the important achievements in the field of studying and promoting the life and work of Nizami Ganjavi received at the Academy under the guidance and with the direct participation of the President of ANAS, academician Ramiz Mehdiyev, the members of the Presidium of ANAS took the initiative to award the medal to academician Ramiz Mehdiyev and a scientist of Turkish origin living in the USA, professor of the Faculty of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the University of North Carolina USA, Nobel Prize laureate in Chemistry, member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, known for important discoveries in the field of DNA, the world-famous Aziz Sanjar. The initiative received support from the country's leadership at the highest level.
Thus, on the recommendation of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and in connection with the “Year of Nizami Ganjavi”, the “Gold Medal of the Republic of Azerbaijan named after Nizami Ganjavi” was awarded to the President of ANAS, academician Ramiz Mehdiyev and Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, world-famous scientist Aziz Sanjar.
At the meeting, Acting First Vice-President of ANAS, academician Arif Hashimov presented the “Gold Medal of the Republic of Azerbaijan named after Nizami Ganjavi” to academician Ramiz Mehdiyev.
