Cooperation in the field reducing the harm of radon on human health

ANAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics (IGG) carries out the research in the field of radon harm reduction.

In order to familiarize with the experience of European countries in solving this problem Head of department of "Gamma-spectrometry of geological environment" of the institute, corresponding member of ANAS, Professor Chingiz Aliyev and head of the Department of "Fluid dynamics sedimentary of swimming pools", corresponding member of ANAS Akbar Feyzullayev visited University of Applied Sciences (UAS), in Lugano, Swiss.

The meeting was also attended by scientists from Germany and Austria. Parties shared their experience of struggle against radon gas, were also discussed the possibility of joint research, identified a specific work that can be executed.

Participants of the meeting were presented with appropriate methodical manuals, including publications that reflected the new approaches in minimization of the radon risk.

After Switzerland, IGG officials attended the international conference entitled "Radon in the Environment - 2015", which was organized by the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

At the five-day event, which was held in Krakow, was presented countries such as Russia, Hungary, Austria, France, Italy, China and others.

The 65th lecture that reflected the results of research into the dangers of radon in different parts of the world and the possibility of new studies were delivered.

C.Aliyev and A. Feyzullayev's joint report on "Regularities of Distribution of Radon in Structures and Environment in Azerbaijan" caused a great interest.

Noted that radon gas is widespread in the world.

When the the gas concentration exceeds norm it causes disease of lung cancer.

Among the factors causing lung cancer radon is second after smoking.

IGG started to conduct joint research with the UAS in the distribution of radon in the country in 2010.

In some residential buildings located mainly in the mountainous regions of the country, was revealed the contents of radon gas exceeding the permissible limits.

As Ch. Aliyev noted, studying of foreign experience in identifying of radon zones is one of the tasks set in the "Program of actions for research and reduction of radonic danger in the Azerbaijan Republic for 2014-2018" approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.

Besides ANAS, the implementation of this program are involved the employees of the ministries "Emergency Situations", "Ecology and Natural Resources", "Healthcare" of the Azerbaijan Republic.
