ANAS hosted an international conference titled “Azerbaijan-Korea Scientific Cooperation in the Field of Archeology”

The international conference themed “Azerbaijan-Korea Scientific Cooperation in the Field of Archeology” was held in the main building of ANAS on June 20.

Well-known scientists and specialists in archeology from Korea, Turkey, and Georgia, employees of the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology of ANAS, and mass media representatives participated in the conference.

The president of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbeyli delivered an opening speech at the meeting. He highlighted the importance of the event which had been traditionally held for the third year, in promoting our national-cultural heritage and history, comprehensive studying of our culture, and development of tourism.

The head of ANAS noted that South Korea was one of the first states that supported our country in the process of returning to Karabakh, the ancient land of Azerbaijan, liberated from occupation during the 44-day Patriotic War under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev. The academician highlighted the great role of the Republic of Korea in realization of the concept of a “smart city”, a “smart village” in the liberated territories.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that in recent years, the Azerbaijan-Korean archaeological expedition had conducted extensive archaeological investigations in Karabakh and great results had been obtained during the investigations carried out in Yedditepe kurgans (burial mounds) in Fuzuli with the participation of Korean archaeologists.

The academician reminded the time when some years ago together with the late Professor Ilyas Babayev, a corresponding member of ANAS, he got acquainted with the scientific research and archaeological excavations conducted by the Azerbaijan-Korea joint archaeological expedition in Gabala. He also noted that books related to the history, ethnography, and folklore of Gabala had been published in 3 languages as a result of comprehensive studies conducted by the Gabala ethnographic expedition of the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology in Gabala region. According to Isa Habibbeyli the Azerbaijani historians, ethnographers, archaeologists and folklorists use this book as an essential source and the publication is a valuable contribution of the Archaeological Study Group to Azerbaijani science.

The head of ANAS pointed out the necessity of carrying out fundamental scientific research in the field of anthropology and paying attention to the training of highly qualified personnel in this sphere. He stressed that considerable work had been conducted in the Academy for developing anthropology science, which is a new sphere in Azerbaijan. According to the academician Isa Habibbeyli it is significant to expand the activities in the sphere of anthropology with the brotherly Turkey and other countries during the modern period.
