“Wikipedia” virtual encyclopedia, successfully realizing in the internet and attaching vital importance in terms of national interests, was launched on January 15, 2001 and shifted into one of the most popular projects of the Internet in a short time. Today, it is the hugest encyclopedia of the world and a rich data source.

Wikipedia co-founders are PhD at Ohayo University Jimmy Wales and American entrepreneur Larry Sanger. Today, “Wikipedia” has the highest rating among the hundreds of millions of websites on the Internet in terms of number of users and applications, and overload information. Wiki-environment is stored over 40 million encyclopedic article, almost 30 million photos, videos and audio files. Each month about 4 billion Internet users appeal to this encyclopedia due to obtain data. There are 300 million registered users of the project.

Dynamic and constantly updating is the main reason of the popularity of "Wikipedia". Currently, initial information about the people, state, any event, and other prominent persons are derived from here. The applicants of a virtual encyclopedia can get not only encyclopedic information, but also the media files into pages, animated diagrams, three-dimensional objects, interactive panoramas as well.

It should be noted that opportunities created by the “Wikipedia” is estimated by directory of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. The Wiki Center was established to the Institute of Information Technology by the decision of ANAS Presidium dated January 15, 2014.

Wiki-groups of employees of the scientific institutions and organizations of ANAS were involved in a variety of tasks to operate on different projects of the virtual encyclopedia: necessary knowledge and practical skills training, which involves promoting the organization of training courses, expanding wikimetric researches, content monitoring on Azerbaijan in a wiki scope, and detecting facts such as misinformation and conflicts. Wiki-center assists for the protection of national interests of our country and real-time detection of potential sources of danger, and posting contents reflecting historical truths, modern realities, and cultural- spiritual values of Azerbaijan.
