The President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli met with Professor Salvatore Aricò, the Chief Executive Officer of the world’s most prestigious scientific institution, the International Science Council (ISC), who is on a visit to our country within the framework of COP29.
Expressing his pleasure at seeing the guest in our country, Academician Isa Habibbeyli emphasized that the official opening of COP29, which is now one of the most prestigious events of the world, was held in Baku. He underlined that the decisions of special importance for the future of our world would be made at the conference, including important discussions in the field of science.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli emphasized that the potential of humanitarian and social sciences can be used to solve global problems such as climate change, and that ANAS is interested in cooperating with ISC in this and other areas.
At the meeting held at the Presidium of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli informed the guest about the history of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, its honorable path of development, its achievements, and the structural reforms carried out in recent years. The Academician said that the structural reforms have been implemented at the Academy in line with the calls of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the challenges of modern global science. Significant steps have been taken to advance electronic science in the Academy and to enable our scientists to access global science. For the first time in its history, ANAS officially becoming a member of international scientific organizations, including the ISC, has become an influential participant in decisions made in global science.
Then, Professor Salvatore Aricò, the Chief Executive Officer of ISC, expressed his pleasure in being in Azerbaijan and at ANAS within the framework of COP29. Providing information about the organization he represents, the guest underlined that the ISC, established in 2018, is one of the largest institutions working to advance and integrate science at the international level and the organization aims to enhance science’s contribution to society. The Professor highlighted that supporting the promotion and development of science, bringing scientific knowledge to a wider audience, and encouraging the use of this knowledge are among the primary objectives of ISC. The ISC brings together main representatives of the global scientific community as well as national and regional scientific organizations. According to the Chief Executive Officer, the International Science Council includes more than 250 academies, scientific unions, and national and international scientific organizations from over 140 countries. These organizations come together to prepare global scientific programs and closely cooperate with the United Nations and other prestigious organizations and provide necessary resources for solution of global challenges.
Expressing his satisfaction with ANAS’s membership in the organization and joint cooperation, Professor Salvatore Arico said that, in addition to the exact and natural sciences, they are also interested in developing relations with the Academy in the fields of humanities and social sciences.
He emphasized that the proposals made by Academician Isa Habibbeyli during the meeting will be discussed at the ISC’s General Assembly meeting, to be held in Muscat, Oman, from January 26-30, 2025, with the joint participation of scientific institutions of member countries.
After the speeches, the commemorative gifts were presented to the guest.
Later, the official from the International Science Council got acquainted with the historic building-the Presidium of ANAS.
The meeting was also attended by Alik Ismayilzada, a professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany and who was the first Secretary of the International Science Council, as well as docent Esmira Alirzayeva, Head of the International Relations Department of the Presidium administration of ANAS.
