“The Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, which has a glorious historical and development path and has made its mark in the country’s and the world’s science with the prominent scholars it has raised, will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2025. The preparation works regarding the 80th anniversary of ANAS are ongoing at present, within this framework, several important publications will be released”-said the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli at the meeting of the Working Group on the preparation of the “Development Concept and Roadmap of ANAS for 2025-2030”.
Speaking about the history and development path of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli pointed out that considering the importance of the scientific inventions of Academician Yusif Mammadaliyev, who played a significant role in the fate of World War II with the discovery of high-octane gasoline, and other scholars, the leadership of the USSR made a decision to establish an Academy of Sciences in the former union countries, including Azerbaijan, for the development of scientific and technical progress. Saying that the Academy, as well as Azerbaijani scientists, have achieved many successes during the past period, the academician noted that during the Soviet period, ANAS was surrounded by care of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev, and that in the early years of independence, in the 1990s, the Academy was saved from the threat of closure due to the high value placed on science by the National Leader. The head of ANAS said that National Leader held one of his first meetings with Azerbaijani scientists at the Academy after returning to power and made important decisions for the development of ANAS, in the 1990s, during its period of stagnation.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that the meeting of the National Leader with the Academy’s leadership on January 31, 1997, was one of the turning points in the fate of ANAS during the years of independence, where the future tasks of the Academy of Sciences were determined, and special attention was given to the social issues of scientists.
The head of ANAS noted that significant reforms have been started since 2022 towards the establishment of a renewed Academy, for the first time within the former system of Academies of Sciences, the “Electronic Academy” department was created at ANAS, using internal resources. For the first time in the history of ANAS, it was elected as a member with voting rights in international organizations such as the International Association of Academies of Sciences, the International Scientific Council, the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA), and the Inter-Academy Partnership Association (IAP).
The head of ANAS emphasized that for many years, Azerbaijani science was far from cooperation with academic institutions of Asian countries and today, scientific and technological progress in Asian countries is at a high level, and considering this, ANAS applied for and was accepted as a member of the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA). He also mentioned that new departments were established in several institutes of ANAS to expand scientific relations with Asian countries, especially China, and that cooperation agreements were signed, as well as Nobel Prize laureate, Professor at the University of North Carolina in the United States, honorary figure of the Turkic world Aziz Sancar made an extensive presentation in this direction at ANAS.
The head of ANAS also added that based on the tasks set by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the interests of the independent Azerbaijani state, and the challenges of modern global science, more than 40 new structures have been created in the scientific institutions and organizations of ANAS, using internal resources. The names of two institutions of ANAS were changed to Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS and the Institute of History and Ethnology of ANAS named after Abbasgulu Agha Bakikhanov.
He pointed out that, within the framework of the reforms carried out to renew the Academy, the new Charter of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, prepared in accordance with the challenges of the new period, was confirmed by the decree of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, dated November 3, 2023.
Speaking about historic Garabagh Victory of Azerbaijan under the leadership of Supreme Commander-in-Chief, President Ilham Aliyev, Academician Isa Habibbeyli noted that our country entered a new historical stage with the full restoration of our state sovereignty and the waving of our State Flag across the entire territory of the republic. He recalled that President Ilham Aliyev set tasks for our intellectuals and scientists regarding future national idea of Azerbaijan in new historical stage. In connection with the implementation of these tasks, three extensive discussions were held at ANAS with the participation of scientists from the humanitarian and social sciences divisions, and that our scientists came to a common opinion on future national idea of Azerbaijan-“A Stronger Azerbaijan, Turkic Unity, Digital Development, and Strategic Partnership”.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that the “Development Concept and Roadmap of ANAS for 2025-2030”, is a part of wide renewal reforms carried out at ANAS since 2022 and underlined that this document would make a significant contribution to the 80th anniversary of the Academy and would play a special role in the future activity direction of the Academy of Sciences.
“The Academy must be renewed preserving our fundamental scientific traditions and scientific schools. Participation of every scientist in the preparation of the Academy’s new Roadmap is essential. This document will be prepared based on the proposals received from scientists working in the scientific institutions and organizations of ANAS. It will then be submitted for discussion by the Presidium of ANAS and the General Assembly of ANAS”- said Academician Isa Habibbeyli, wishing success to the Working Group.
