The bright memory of the victims of the January 20 tragedy was honored at the meeting of the Presidium of ANAS

In connection with the 35th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy, the bright memory of the tragedy victims was honored with a moment of silence at the next meeting of the Presidium of ANAS.

During his speech at the event, the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli mentioned that the January 20 tragedy was one of the turning points on the path that led the modern Republic of Azerbaijan to independence. Thanks to the heroism of our people and the determination of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, the leadership of the USSR could not achieve its insidious goals. He noted that during the January 20 events, the brave sons and daughters of our people fought unarmed against the armed Soviet army, sacrificing their lives for freedom and our state independence and became martyrs. Mentioning that the first legal and political assessment to the events was given by National Leader Heydar Aliyev, Academician Isa Habibbeyli added that the National Leader visited the mission of Azerbaijan in Moscow and informed the international community about the Bloody January 20, conveyed just voice of our people to the world, and courageously spoke about the inhuman acts of the Soviet leadership.

The head of the ANAS emphasized that in 1994, at the initiative of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev, the Milli Majlis adopted a special resolution, officially giving political and legal assessment to the terrible tragedy suffered by our people.

The Academician also said that although the events of January 20 entered the history of Azerbaijan as a tragedy, they were a turning point in the life of our people, further strengthening our national unity and solidarity.

He noted that over the past 35 years, the victims of the January 20 tragedy have always been honored by our people, and their family members have been surrounded by the attention and care of the state.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli noted that, in connection with the 35th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy, events and exhibitions have been organized in the scientific institutions and organizations of ANAS. Through these events, the heroism of our martyrs has been conveyed to younger generations.

Then, the Acting Vice-President of ANAS, Academician Govhar Bakhshaliyeva delivered a report in which she spoke in detail about the January 20 tragedy, the courage and heroism of the sons and daughters of our people, the legal and political assessment given to these events by the Great Leader Heydar Aliyev and the attention and care of President Ilham Aliyev for the families of the martyrs.

Academician Govhar Bakhshaliyeva stated that January 20 is a heroic chapter in the history of struggle for the freedom and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. She emphasized that the brave sons and daughters of the Azerbaijani people rose to fight for the independence and freedom of Azerbaijan. On the night of January 19 to 20, 1990, they stood unarmed against the heavy military vehicles of the Soviet army, displaying true courage and bravery, and wrote another page in the heroic chronicle of our people.
