Victims of March 31 genocide commemorated at the Institute of Oriental Studies

ANAS Institute of Oriental Studies hosted the event dedicated to March 31 -the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis, on March 30.

Director of the Institute, corresponding member of ANAS Govhar Bakhshaliyeva told about ethnic cleansing, genocide and aggression policy against Azerbaijanis.

She also noted that, national leader Heydar Aliyev’s decree on March 26, 1998 “About genocide of Azerbaijanis” as the first political assessment to the genocide.

It was noted that, in 1918-1920 in Baku, Guba, Shamakhi, Kurdamir, Lankaran, as well as in Shusha, in the territory of the province of Erivan, Zangezur, Nakhichevan, Ordubad, Kars and in other regions massacres committed by Armenians and thousands of people were killed by the most cruel ways and banished from their land.

G.Bakhshaliyeva also spoke about the recently published and presented at the event, the book "Southern Azerbaijan: genocide of 1918," by researcher of the Institute of the Department of South Azerbaijan Hasan Safari.

"Based on the research, it is clear that the genocide perpetrated against Azerbaijan by the Armenian – aysor armed groups in the western region of Azerbaijan in 1918, which was part of the genocidal plan against Azerbaijanis in all regions, including the territory of modern Azerbaijan. The purpose of the implementation of the genocide was the destruction of the indigenous population on the territory of South Azerbaijan and the creation of "Great Armenia", changing the demographic situation in their favor.

It was reported that monograph explores the process of subjecting the genocide of up to 200 thousand Azerbaijanis in the western part of South Azerbaijan (Urmia, Salmas, Khoy and surrounding towns) by the united Armenian armed forces, created with the support of Russia and Western states during the First World War (1914-1918 years). The book presented to readers on the basis of reliable sources analyzed organization and snap some Armenians of Western states and Tsarist Russia, and missionary organizations to create "Great Armenia" in the territories of Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Then, acting Academician-Secretary of the Department of Social Sciences, corresponding member of ANAS Nargiz Akhundova noted that the processes taking place in Northern Azerbaijan in the beginning of the last century, just occurred in South Azerbaijan. Stressing the importance of the presented books, N.Akhundov noted the need to disseminate new publications around the world in English, Russian, Persian and other languages.

The event also was listened reports on the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis.
