Next assembly of the Department of Earth Sciences (DES) was held at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, June 16.

Assembly with participation of bureau members of the department was opened by Academician-Secretary of DES Academician Fakhraddin Gadirov, who paid attention to the issues of agenda.

At the event was carried out a director election to the Institute of Oil and Gas by hidden ballot in accordance with the announcement of holding director post at the institutes of ANAS dated May 5, 2016. Under results of hidden ballot, Vice-President of ANAS Academician Ibrahim Guliyev has been elected the director of the Institute.

Later on, Academician Parviz Mammadov made a presentation on “Investigation of sequences of the Caspian Sea basin sedimentary to the great depths”. The lecture conducts key reasons (tectonic sedimentary, gravity of sediment layer, isostasy and subduction) Caspian Sea basin sedimentary to the great depths (25-30 km) as a result of studies via Paris-IV, MSU universities, companies Chevron (USA), BP (UK) within the long-termed international projects Peritetis, MEBE, and Darius. In this respect, straight and reverse modeling, role of bathymetry, sedimentary and tectonics were explored at the various development phases of the basin. Research models were set, based on regional profiles "backsripping analyse" and seismostratigraphic interpretation, a role of each factor in sedimentary of basin has been identified. As a result of studies, sections of the Caspian Sea basin have been developed over regional profiles, speed and paleogeographical condition of the sediment was clarified at various stages.

By the decision of the Department, P.Mammadov’s lecture of scientific-research nature was approved. It was proposed to publish the new results of the lecture, which gained on actual data, on the academic journals.

Assembly scheduled the issue of publishing “Anthology of region folklore” of the Sheki Regional Scientific Center of ANAS as well.

In closing, several staff problems were discussed.
