On September 28, Institute of Literature named after Nizami Ganjavi of ANAS held a meeting with Nobel Prize Winner Nigerian writer Wole Soyinka.
In advance, Vice-President of ANAS director of the institute Academician Isa Habibbeyli greeted the guest and expressed his pleasure at seeing him in a science temple of Azerbaijan.
Scientist brought to mind the visits of several Nobel Winners to our country up today, and contributions of these visits for setting up collaboration in various scientific spheres in Azerbaijan.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli underlined the first visit of Nobel Prize Winner in Literature Wole Soyinka to Azerbaijan and spoke about his rich life and activity. He highlighted him not only as the first African writer, who gained Nobel Prize, but also as a notable representative of new literature in English.
Wole Soyinka was awarded the Nobel Prize for “creation of national theatre capable of cultural perspective and poetics” in 1986. The struggle for sake of his life and living, wide range of challenges faced and anguish are mainstreamed in writer’s works: "Consistently being engaged in poetry, prose and drama W.Soyinka’s poems penned while in prison, are very popular in Africa", noted Academician.
It was mentioned that, Azerbaijani writer Nariman Abdulrehmanli has translated writer’s work “Interpreters” into native language.
Then, Academician Isa Habibbeyli donated memorial gifts to Nigerian writer Wole Soyinka.
Making speech at the event Nobel Winner spoke about his first creativity patterns, voluminous works, including on the features of African literature. He informed about a period of national liberation movement, and the innovations in the field of literature as well.
At the event, Nariman Abdulrehmanli and institute’s associate Shukufe Aliyeva told about Nigerian writer’s fictional works and creativity.
After responding numerous questions of meeting attendees, the writer has taken a memorial photo with them.
In closing, W.Soyinka highly appreciated meeting with Azerbaijan scientists and thanked to Acad. Isa Habibbeyli for this opportunity.
