In an interactive lesson, which organized among ANAS Nakhchivan Branch and secondary schools of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, students were given detailed information about the autonomity of Nakhchivan.

In the interactive lesson “Autonomity of Nakhchivan: history and modernity”, Academician Ismayil Hajiyev stated that, Nakhchivan, ancient region of Azerbaijan, historically has passed a difficult way full of challenges. It was noted that in the years 1918-1921 Armenians claimed territorial suits with some regions of Azerbaijan, made raids and tried to gain Nakhchivan. Bolshevik Russia was the closest ally of Armenians in realization of idea “Great Armenia” and rendered to assist them. The result was a loss of Zangazur province of Azerbaijan. Subsequently, Nakhchivan region fell apart from Azerbaijan and its autonomity issue has come to an agenda.

Recalling words of National leader Heydar Aliyev: “If Zangazur province would not be given to Armenia, probably autonomity of Nakhchivan is not needed and Azerbaijan could be a country encompassing a unique territory”, - academician stressed out that, Armenian dashnaks attempted for a long time to join Nakhchivan into the “Great Armenia” but failed.

It was noted that, Moscow and Gars agreements made Nakhchivan to remain as an autonomus republic in Azerbaijan. Under the agreements the Russia, Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan recognized Nakhchivan as an autonomous republic and gave international legal guarantee.

Autonomity status of Nakhchivan consists of several stages. Since March 16, 1921 was named Nakhchivan Soviet Socialist Republic, after June 16, 1923 – Nakhchivan region, since February 9, 1924 – Nakhchivan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, while from 17 November 1990 - Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic was noted.

Prior to the attention of schoolchildren was informed that 8 times holiday Nakhchivan autonomy was grandly observed over the past period. 4 of anniversaries were celebrated in the years of independence. Marked by the Decree of the national leader Heydar Aliyev on February 4, 1999 75th anniversary, the Order of February 6, 2009 – 85th anniversary and the Order of 14 January 2014 – 90th anniversary has special historical and scientific importance.

It was noted that after the collapse of the Soviet Union national leader Heydar Aliyev’s Nakhchivan period of activity is a brilliant page of national history. Thanks to a strong will, determination and experience of the great leader in the government of the autonomous republic territory was protected from enemy aggression. The reforms, which are the foundations, were laid by the great leader Heydar Aliyev successfully continues to this day.
