“The role of the media in the preservation and development of Azerbaijani literary language” conference starts in Baku

A conference entitled “The role of the media in the preservation and development of Azerbaijani literary language” has kicked off in International Media Centre.

State and government officials, linguists, parliamentarians, media executives attend the conference, which is held under instructions of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

Ali Hasanov, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for Public and Political Affairs opened the meeting. Mr. Hasanov underlined that, Azerbaijani language is one of the main attributes of our state, and our language is also an important element of the ideology of Azerbaijanism, its political and socio-cultural basis with dual functions. The state language allows us to achieve unity of multiculturalism, which is characterized by our national solidarity, established in our republic. These factors require us to be sensitive to the use and development of the state language.

The assistant to the president noted that the Azerbaijani language passed various historical stages until it reached its present level. Speaking about the definition of the language policy of the independent Azerbaijan state, Professor Ali Hasanov said that the Constitution of Azerbaijan adopted in 1995 was identified as one of the main institutions of national statehood. One of the important steps taken to strengthen the national-moral and political-legal status of the Azerbaijani language was the signing of the Decree "On Improvement of the State Language Application" in June 2001. In the decree, the role and function of the Azerbaijani language as historical development paths, as well as an independent statehood attribute, have been thoroughly reviewed. At the same time, on August 1, 2001 it was decided to move from to Latin alphabet. On August 9, another decree was signed by the national leader Heydar Aliyev o declare August 1 as the Day of Azerbaijani Alphabet and the Azerbaijani Language.

Noting that the language policy pursued by the great leader Heydar Aliyev was continuously being continued by President Ilham Aliyev today, Ali Hasanov noted. The head of state delivered a speech at the meeting dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences in November 2015, about protecting the state language against external influences and against the use of foreign words in our language without need. The President of Azerbaijan carries out consistent measures to expand the scope of the state language. On January 12, 2004, the President signed a decree "On the publication of mass media in Latin language in Azerbaijan", "On the publication of the National Encyclopedia of Azerbaijan" on January 14, 2004, and on December 30, Order on approval of the list of works of outstanding representatives of the world literature in Azerbaijani language".

President Ilham Aliyev in May 2012 signed "The State Program on the use of Azerbaijani language in accordance with the requirements of time in the globalization environment and the development of linguistics in the country", Hasanov noted. The importance of increasing the attention of the Azerbaijani language on the internet and other issues are also emphasized in the decree.

Assistant to the President noted that the media should focus on the state of the use of the language, the protection and development of the Azerbaijani language, and the views on existing problems should be voiced. He expressed confidence that the steps to be taken would help to clarify and eliminate the causes of the shortcomings.

Assistant to the President for Public and Political Affairs Ali Hasanov, Chairman of the National Television and Radio Council Nushiravan Maharramov, Chairman of Azerbaijan Press Council, MP Aflatun Amashov, director of Azerbaijan Ataturk Center, MP Nizami Jafarov, director of the Institute of Folklore Mukhtar Kazimoglu-Imanov and Director of the Institute of Linguistics named after Nasimi Mohsun Naghisoylu delivered speeches at the conference.
