Academician Mukhtar Imanov delivered a paper dedicated to dervishism at the International Symposium held in Samarkand

International Scientific Symposium on "The role of scholars of the Samarkand madrasah in the development of Islamic culture and the system of education in the Middle Ages" held on October 13-14, 2017 in Samarkand, the Republic of Uzbekistan.

At the symposium dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Samarkand State University and the 600th anniversary of the creation of the Madrassah of Ulugbek, our country was represented by the Director of ANAS Institute of Folklore, Academician Mukhtar Imanov.

At the event, which attended by numerous scientists and cultural figures from Germany, Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and other countries, Academician M.Imanov delivered paper on "Two Different Directions of Belief in Connection with Dervishes".

The report reflects a positive and negative attitude towards dervishes in popular literature. It was noted that, both in fairy tales and epics, and in real life, the dervishes were divided into noble and ignoble. They were welcomed by people, at the same time they were persecuted. The reason for the ambivalent attitude towards the dervishes was their connection with shamanism and very free behavior. The subdivision of the dervishes on the good and the evil resembles the division of shamans into white and black. The power of the dervishes came from shamanic wonders.

M. Imanov also presided over one of the sessions of the symposium section.
