A number of ANAS scientific institutions and organizations held commemoration events devoted to the 28th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy.

At the event held at the Institute of Literature after Nizami Ganjavi, ANAS Vice-President, Director of this scientific institution, Academician Isa Habibbeyli noted that, the tragedy of January 20 was organized to suppress the independence and sovereignty of the Azerbaijani people and the first legal assessment of these events was given by the national leader Heydar Aliyev.

Speaking at the event held at the Institute of Physics, Academician Dzhavad Abdinov noted that on the night of 19-20 January 1990 in Baku, from the side of the Soviet leadership, troops consisting of six hundred soldiers were introduced. He stressed that, during the tragedy of January 20, 147 people were killed, 744 people were injured, and 841 people were illegally arrested.

Director of the Institute of Caucasus Studies, corresponding member of ANAS Musa Gasimli, speaking at the event in the institute, described the events of January 20 as a heroic page of the history of our people and noted the importance of bringing to the future generations the whole truth about this bloody crime.

Opening the event, held at the Institute of the History of Science, Director of the institution, Doctor of Historical Sciences Maryam Seidbeyli said that, the events of January 20 went down in history as a heroic record of the struggle for freedom and territorial integrity of our country.

At a recent event at the Institute of Physiology, Deputy Director for Science, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Ahmed Hajiyev in his speech spoke about the terrorist act committed by the leadership of the USSR 28 years ago to suppress the Azerbaijani people who rose to fight for national freedom, sovereignty, and noted that the attackers could not achieve their goal.
