An event on "Underwater archeological expedition - 50, Viktor Kvachidze - 85" held

ANAS National Museum of Azerbaijan History hosted a scientific seminar on "Subsea archeological expedition -50, Viktor Kvacidze - 85" on March 13.

Director of the museum, academician Naila Valikhanli informed about expedition conducted a large-scale submarine archaeological search in the Caspian Sea 50 years ago, expedition head Viktor Kvachidze. She said that, in 1968 an underwater expedition to the Caspian Sea was organized under the leadership of the museum's archaeologist V.Kvachidze. Today's event is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the expedition and the 85th anniversary of its permanent leader V.Kvacidze.

N.Valkhanli, who has been working with V.Kvachidze for many years told about various meetings and events were held in the museum, about the expedition's activity.

It was noted that, a special section devoted to the expedition was organized in the museum and there are archeological materials found there.

Then, department head, PhD in history Nasir Guluzadeh delivered a report on "Underwater Archeological Research in the Caspian Aquatic Sea and Viktor Kvachidze".

He informed about the expedition and the activity of V.Kvacidze's department. It was noted that, twenty years ago, V.Kvachidze headed the underwater archeological expedition organized by the museum for twenty years.

Under his leadership, Azerbaijan's archeology has achieved some successes.

N.Guluzadeh said that, in 1968-1987 a research group led by archaeologist V.Kvachidze organized archaeological expeditions to study underwater monuments along the Azerbaijani coast of the Caspian Sea and underwater cans of Pogoreloy, Pavlov and Kura, as well as the islands of Bull, Oblivnaya, Xianggyi-Mugan, Boyukdash, Kichikdash, Pirsagat ridges, Cape Amburan Absheron (old Bilgya), Gyurgan and others.

Speakers at the event talked about the activities of the underwater archeological expedition under the leadership of V.Kvachidze and stressed the importance of development of this sphere in the modern period.
