Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences held a scientific session dedicated the 80th anniversary of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics on November 15.
Firstly, the participants of the event visited the Alley of Honor, laid a wreath and flowers at the grave of the national leader Heydar Aliyev.
The session, organized at ANAS main building, was attended by prominent statesmen and scientists, representatives of public and international organizations, guests from foreign countries, heads of various state organizations and universities, full members and corresponding members of ANAS, directors of institutions and institutions, mass media representatives.
Opening the event with opening remarks, President of ANAS, Director of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, academician Akif Alizadeh noted that, over the past 80 years the Institute has passed a glorious development path and played an important role in the development of geology in the country. Academician stressed that, the scientific institution has made a great contribution to the development of geological sciences, solving fundamental and applied problems in studying the geological structure and geodynamic state of the republic’s territory, mud volcanism and developing mathematical models of geological processes, as well as creating and strengthening the mineral resource base of Azerbaijan and implementation of the oil strategy.
He said that, the scientific achievements of the scientists of the Institute have always been praised by the state. Recalling the Order of President Ilham Aliyev on awarding a group of employees of the Institute on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of honorary titles, orders and medals, academician Akif Alizadeh stressed that, this document is another evidence of the attention and care that the state provides science.
Expressing the confidence that, applying new geophysical methods and modern technologies during scientific research, the staff of institute will also make in the future a notable contribution to social and economic development of Azerbaijan, being engaged in search of new oil and gas fields and deposits of minerals and studying dangerous geological processes, relying on space technologies, the academician Akif Alizadeh congratulated staff of institute on anniversary and wished employees success in their further activity.
Then, Deputy Director of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics on scientific affairs, corresponding member of ANAS Dadash Huseynov delivered a report on the “80th path leading to the heights of science”. The scientist said that, the history of the creation of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics dates back to the creation of the Society for Research and Study of Azerbaijan in 1923: “Based on the basis of this society, in 1932, the Azerbaijan branch of the Transcaucasian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR was created to study the natural resources of Azerbaijan. In 1935, the Azerbaijan branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR was established on the basis of the department, including sectors covering a number of scientific fields, including geology. In 1938, on the initiative of prominent Russian scientists (Sh.A. Azizbekov, M.A.Kashkai, A.Yagubov) and by the support of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences, an independent research institution, the Institute of Geology was established. In 2014, the institute was renamed as the Institute of Geology and Geophysics".
Speaking about sciences schools in the field of geology, Dadash Huseynov noted that, paleontologo-stratigrafichesky researches which were conducted in our country since 1927 gained the rapid development in 1950 and under the leadership of the academician M.M.Aliyev at institute the Department of paleontology and stratigraphy was created. Subsequently as a part of this department Mezozoy, Kaynozoy, Paleozoy, Mikrofauna and Biogeokhimiya laboratories were organized. It also added that the school of sciences of the paleontologists and stratigraf studying deposits of the mesozoic period which founder is M.M. Aliyev gained fame in the USSR as "The Baku school" on a stratigraphy of the Jurassic and cretaceous systems.
Scientist reported that one more large school of sciences created at Institute of geology and geophysics is the school on geophysics. Important results in the field of seismology and geodynamics, gravitation measurements, radiometry, a magnetometry, a geothermics and studying of physical properties of breeds were received.
Now the Institute of geology and geophysics is large international scientific center in which researches of fundamental and applied character are conducted. Here schools of sciences in the sphere of oil geology, mud volcanism and paleontology and a stratigraphy, lithology, geophysics, geotectonics and geodynamics, development of oil and gas fields were created. Thanks to transfer of scientific achievements and experience from generation to generation the schools conducting basic and applied researches in the field of geology and geophysics, development and operation of oil fields were kept.
The event was addressed by the First Vice-President of the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan, academician Yusifzadeh Khoshbakht, Rector of Baku State University, academician Abel Maharramov, Rector of Azerbaijan State University of Oil and Industry, Professor Mustafa Babanli, First Deputy Chief Scientific Secretary of NAS of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of NAS Ukraine Vladimir Emelyanov, Vice-President of ANAS, academician Dilgam Tagiyev, Deputy Director of the Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences Vasily Lavrushin, head of the Department of Minerals of Baku State University, academician Vasif Babazadeh, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, Professor Hikmet Makhmudov, who spoke about the history of the institute, its areas of activity, projects and research implemented by the institute, successful results, and also noted that the scientific institution made a great contribution to the development of geology. The speakers congratulated the staff of the institute on the 80th anniversary and wished the staff success in their future research.
In conclusion, a documentary film dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS was demonstradet.
The scientific session will continue its work on November 16 at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics by listening the scientific reports.
